(Dayton, OH) - Hunter Gaddis tossed six scoreless innings on the mound for the Lake County Captains (41-36) in a 9-0 win over the Dayton Dragons (41-35) on Saturday night at Day Air Ballpark.
Saturday's game was scoreless until one big swing put the Captains ahead in the top of the fifth. Raynel Delgado singled with one out and Dayton starter Carson Spiers walked Aaron Bracho. Spiers, however, picked Delgado off of second for the second out. With two outs and one aboard, Joe Donovan hooked a two-run homer off the left field foul pole to put the Captains in front, 2-0.
The Captains exploded for five insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Sam Hellinger relieved Spiers and fell behind early. The right-hander walked José Tena to lead off the inning and Micah Pries followed with an RBI double to right. After Hellinger hit George Valera with a pitch, Joe Naranjo ripped a single to center that brought home Pries and sent Valera to third. With the Captains ahead, 4-0, Victor Nova came up and hit a potential double play ball to second base. Victor Ruiz, however, sailed the throw to second base. Valera scored to give the Captains a 5-0 lead, while Nova and Naranjo advanced to second and third on the error. Delgado came up next and jumped on the first pitch for an RBI single to center to score Naranjo. Hellinger struck out Bracho, but walked Donovan to put men on the corners. Matt Gill relieved Hellinger to face Quentin Holmes, but the Captains stole one more run. Donovan stole second and Nova swiped home when the throw went to second base. The five-run frame gave the Captains a 7-0 lead.
Nova led off the top of the eighth with a double down the right field line. A Delgado groundout pushed Nova to third with one out. That brought Aaron Bracho to the plate and he connected for an opposite field blast to left field for a two-run home run. The long ball extended the Captains lead to 9-0.
