Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - A four-run first inning paved the way for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a 12-2 victory Saturday night against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Kernels (43-34) head into the series finale with a 3-2 advantage over the Timber Rattlers (37-39).
Wisconsin built a quick 4-0 lead within the opening stanza. Joe Gray Jr. and Jesús Lujano opened the scoring with RBI singles. LG Castillo added a run via wild pitch, and Yeison Coca produced his own run-scoring single.
Cedar Rapids got on the scoreboard early in the second inning before Wisconsin stretched its lead to 7-1. Michael Helman's RBI groundout helped the Kernels briefly trim their deficit. However, Thomas Dillard and Castillo hit back-to-back home runs during a three-run outburst.
Both teams notched a run within the third. Alex Isola collected an RBI single to try and keep Cedar Rapids in the contest. Antonio Piñero answered by doubling home Coca and putting the advantage at 8-2 Wisconsin.
The Timber Rattlers finalized their winning margin of 12-2 with four more tallies. Nick Kahle doubled during the fifth and came in after two wild pitches. In the sixth, Lujano rattled off a two-run double and later scored on Kahle's RBI single.
John LaRossa (1-1) notched his first victory within affiliated baseball, and Cody Laweryson (0-3) took the loss. LaRossa, who has pitched exclusively for Wisconsin following his signing out of independent baseball, tallied six strikeouts over three shutout innings. Laweryson was charged for three runs in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
