Caps' New-Look Squad Rolls into Youngstown
March 4, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
Youngstown, OH - Following an active trade deadline day on Monday, the Madison Capitols (20-21-4-3) will look to pick up a point for the seventh time on their nine-game road swing on Friday as they visit the Youngstown Phantoms (22-16-4-5) at the Covelli Centre. Puck drop is set for 6:05 p.m. CT.
The Capitols had an extremely busy Monday evening, as the squad acquired defenseman Alex Robert, forward Marshall Moise, & future considerations from the Waterloo Black Hawks in exchange for Ryan Lohin & Sam McCormick. Later that same day, the Capitols announced a swapping of defenseman, acquiring Chris Jones & future considerations from the Fargo Force for Tommy Muck.
Each of those three acquisitions is expected to make their Capitols' debuts Friday night. The Youngstown Phantoms stood pat at the trade deadline, but will be looking for answers following a demoralizing 10-1 defeat at the hands of the Bloomington Thunder last Saturday. In the loss, the Youngstown penalty kill, which sits second from the bottom in the USHL, relented six tallies to a scorching Thunder man advantage.
Youngstown's offense has been powered all year by rookie sensation Cameron Morrison, who leads all rookies with 26 goals, good for second among all USHL players.
In the clubs' prior meeting in Madison on Jan. 9, the Capitols took an early 3-1 lead, but Youngstown answered back to pull within one just 15 seconds later, and Colin DeAugustine had a remarkable relief appearance, stopping all 26 Capitols shots he faced in a 5-3 Youngstown win. The Capitols chased Ryan Bednard on just five shots and three goals in the opening 10:16 of game action. Eric & Alex Esposito each scored for Youngstown in the win on a night when the Capitols kept Morrison out of the goal column.
The two-game weekend in Youngstown caps off a nine-game road trip for Madison, which is 4-1-2-0 thus far on the season-long stint away from home. The Phantoms, meanwhile, are attempting to climb back into playoff positioning after being swept by fourth-place Bloomington last weekend. Youngstown has dropped four of its last five games, each in regulation time. Since a six-goal output against Cedar Rapids on Feb. 19, the Phantoms have scored just five goals in the last three games, while giving up 16.
The two teams will reconvene one more time this weekend on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. CT from the Covelli Centre. The Caps will then return home for the next four games, which includes another contest with the Phantoms on Saturday, March 12 at 7:05 p.m.
