Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Dubuque, IA-In one of their better efforts of the year, the Sioux Falls Stampede earned a big point in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Dubuque Fighting Saints Friday night from the Mystique Ice Center. Dubuque won the game with just 7.7 seconds remaining in overtime as the Herd fell to 22-22-4 on the year, but remained in fifth place in the Western Conference, just one point back of fourth place Omaha. Carson Gicewicz and Parker Tuomie tallied the goals for the Herd while Ales Stezka was stellar between the pipes, stopping 33 of 36 shots in goal.

After a long bus ride from Sioux Falls you would have understood if the Herd came out a little flat, but it was the Herd who came out with all the energy and were outshooting the Saints 7-2 in the early goings, but couldn't get one past goaltender Hunter Miska. The Saints would take advantage one of the Stampede's few mistakes in the first period and took a 1-0 lead when Michael O'Leary broke free in the slot and one-timed a pass from Brett Boeing past Stampede netminder Ales Stezka. The Stampede would go on a power play late in the period and have 34 seconds of that advantage carry over into the start of the second period. Dubuque outshot the Herd 10-9 in the period.

The Herd were unable to convert on the power play in the opening seconds of the second period, but were able to generate some offensive pressure and got on the board 4:46 into the period when Carson Gicewicz tallied his third goal of the week. A.J. Vanderbeck wristed a shot onto the Dubuque net that was stopped by Miska, but the rebound bounced to the top of the crease where Gicewicz came sliding in and knocked the puck past the pads of Miska to tie the game 1-1. It would stay tied until the 11:53 mark when the Fighting Saints regained their lead on a goal from Shane Kavanagh. The rest of the period was physical as despite the fact that these teams had not faced each other prior to Friday. Two fights took place in the second and there were scrums in front of the net after nearly every stoppage. The Saints outshot the Herd 13-6 in the period and took that lead into the third.

Sioux Falls was able to tie the game midway through the third period when Parker Tuomie tallied his 23rd goal of the season. Jack Becker found Tuomie behind the net who wrapped the puck around the net and beat Miska on his left side to tie the game 2-2. The rest of the period was intense with both teams exchanging some good scoring chances, but the game remain tied into the final minutes. The Herd worked hard and drew a penalty in the final minute, but were unable to convert and the game went into overtime.

The Stampede began the overtime on a 4-on-3 power play, but couldn't get anything going and the Fighting Saints were able to kill it off. It remained tied into the final minutes, sending the game to a 3-on-3 situation. It appeared the game was headed to a shootout, but the Stampede misplayed the puck at the Saints blue line leading to a 2-on-0 rush for Evan and Mitchell Smith. Mitchell one-timed the pass into the back of the net with just 7.7 seconds remaining to give the Saints the victory.

Dubuque outshot the Herd 5-3 in overtime and 36-24 on the night. The Fighting Saints were 0-for-4 on the power play while the Herd were 0-for-5. The same two teams will square off again Saturday night at 7:05 PM in Dubuque. Fans can catch all the action live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and kelo.com.
