Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Youngstown Phantoms scored three special teams goals en route to a 4-2 victory over the Madison Capitols Friday night. After giving up the first goal, the Phantoms scored three unanswered tallies, two of which came on the power play.
"Not one of the goals we scored tonight was the result of an individual effort. Every goal was guys coming together, working for each other, making smart plays and getting pucks on net," said Phantoms defenseman Vas Kolias.
Marcel Godbout opened up the scoring for Madison, netting his 18th of the campaign just over five minutes into the first frame. Godbout's tally came right after the Phantoms had killed off a Capitols' power play.
The Phantoms would respond quickly however, when Vas Kolias' wrist shot from the point found its way through traffic past Madison netminder Drew Hotte.
Lucas Craggs would give the Phantoms the lead minutes later with a laser wrist shot for his 9th goal of the year. Youngstown would take a 2-1 advantage into the first intermission.
The Phantoms would double their advantage almost half way into the second period. Yushiroh Hirano ripped a slap shot from the point past Hotte for his 18th goal of the season. It was Youngstown's second power play goal of the evening.
Madison would cut the Phantoms lead in half towards the end of the second period behind Eugene Fadyeyev's fourth tally of the year. Just minutes later, however, a costly turnover would doom the Capitols. Madison was on the power play with a chance to tie the game, but a turnover in their own end led to a shorthanded goal for Luke McInnis.
"We talked a lot about getting pucks on net. We had a lot of chances last weekend and unfortunately couldn't get a bounce. I think tonight was a product of hard work and getting pucks on the net; sometimes it's just that simple," said Phantoms coach Brad Patterson.
The Phantoms and Capitols will battle in Youngstown again Saturday night. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. local time.
