Capitols Host Omaha for Halloween Eve Tilt
October 30, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (6-3-0), who currently sit in second place in the USHL's Eastern Conference, will look to make it seven wins in the last eight games against the visiting Omaha Lancers (6-3-2) on Friday night at 7 p.m. inside the Alliant Energy Center.
Coverage of the game can be heard on Madison's 106.7 FM, 1670 AM, The Zone, online at www.madcitysportszone.com, or via the TuneIn radio app.
The Lancers have alternated wins and losses in each of their last six games. They have played three straight 4-3 contests, losing at home to Des Moines in their most recent battle on Oct. 25.
Omaha has excelled defensively through 11 games, holding opponents to 2.6 goals per game while posting the USHL's third best penalty kill at 88.9%. In net, goaltenders Zack Skog and Kris Oldham have put up nearly cloned number; each has won three games with goals against averages below 2.50. Skog's 181 saves place him fourth among USHL goaltenders.
Like the Capitols, who featured NHL legend Teemu Selanne's son, Eetu, the Lancers possess a second-generation of an NHL legend. Austin Lemieux, the son of longtime Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario, has skated in nine games with Omaha after being selected by the Lancers in the USHL Draft in May.
The Capitols, playing in their fifth of six consecutive home games, will look to improve to 4-1-0 at their home rink following two wins in three nights last weekend. The offense has cooled off for Madison, but the goaltending and penalty kill, like Omaha, have continued to shine. Garrett Metcalf has won each of his last four starts, giving up only four goals over his last three outings.
The Madison penalty kill has been steady on home ice, killing off 13 of 15 opponent power plays through four games. Overall, the Madison shorthanded group has killed 27 of the last 30 penalties taken.
The Capitols could, by night's end, take over first place in the USHL's Eastern Conference. They enter with 12 points, trailing only Dubuque's 14 among conference foes. Madison's 6-1-0 stretch elevated the team to fifth place in USA Hockey Magazine's USHL Power Rankings for the week.
The Capitols will get the remainder of Halloween weekend off from game action before completing their six-game homestand on Fri., Nov. 6 against the Dubuque Fighting Saints for the second WJJO Dollar Beer Night of the 2015-16 season.
