October 30, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-Collin Peters goal with 5:45 remaining in regulation would prove to be the game winner as the Stampede held off the Youngstown Phantoms 4-3 before 5,874 fans at the PREMIER Center Friday night. The win was the fourth straight at home for the Herd who have won five of their last six games overall and are now 6-4-0 on the season. Parker Tuomie, Josh Passolt and Jack Doremus also scored for the Herd while Stefanos Lekkas earned the win in goal with 25 saves. With the win, the Herd are now 5-1-0 on home ice.
The first ten minutes of the game saw both teams exchanging scoring chances, but neither team found the back of the net until the 10:37 mark of the first period when Parker Tuomie extended his goal scoring streak to six games. Jack Suter sent a pass up the right wing boards to Tuomie who drove into the right circle who wristed a shot past the right pad of Youngstown goaltender Colin DeAugustine to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. The Phantoms would respond at 15:57 when Alex Esposito pounced on a rebound and beat Stampede goaltender Stefanos Lekkas to tie the game 1-1. Sioux Falls outshot the Phantoms 13-7 in the period.
Sioux Falls regained their lead just 11 seconds into the period when Josh Passolt broke into the Phantoms zone and wristed a shot past the glove side of DeAugustine to make it a 2-1 game. Minutes later the Herd found themselves on the power play, but it was the Phantoms who cashed in when Patrick Kramer found the Stampede sleeping and sent a pass to the blue line for Garrett Hall who went into the Stampede zone untouched and wristed a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net to tie the game, 2-2. Sioux Falls nearly took the lead with eight minutes remaining when Tuomie broke in on a breakaway, but DeAugstine made a great pad save and then stopped Peters on the rebound to keep it tied. It remained tied until 14:47 when Jack Doremus scored his first career USHL goal. A.J. Vanderbeck took the puck deep in the right wing corner and sent a pass into the slot for Doremus who blasted a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net to give the Herd a 3-2 advantage. Sioux Falls outshot Youngstown 13-9 in the period.
Youngstown tried to rally in the third, but Lekkas kept the Herd ahead by a goal for most of the period. Sioux Falls increased their lead at 14:15 when Jack Suter found Collin Peters open in the slot and Peters fired the puck through traffic and past DeAugustine to give the Herd a two-goal edge at 4-2. The Stampede would need that goal as it turned out because the Phantoms connected on the power play at 16:35 on a goal from Cameron Morrison, but it wouldn't be enough as the Stampede held on for the 4-3 victory at the PREMIER Center.
Sioux Falls outshot the Phantoms 40-28 on the night. Youngstown went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Herd went 0-for-4.
The Herd will host Youngstown again on Saturday night at 7:05 PM at the PREMIER Center. Tickets are available through the KELOLAND Box Office or any Ticketmaster location. It will be a special Halloween edition of Stampede hockey with a costume contest for kids and adults and a candy dash for kids 2-12. Fans can register at the Stampede sales table before the game to be entered into the costume contest.
