March 21, 2015 - NBA G League (G League)
Cleveland Charge News Release
The Canton Charge (26-18), presented by SecureData 365 and powered by the Cleveland Cavaliers, were edged out at the hands of the Iowa Energy (23-20), 85-84, in front of 3,900 at the Memorial Civic Center on Saturday night. Just 2.5 games separate Canton and Iowa in the Eastern conference standings, with each team currently holding the two Wild Card playoff spots.
The teams traded blows throughout the night, as neither was able to maintain a consistent advantage with 20 lead changes and 10 ties. With Canton leading 81-79, Iowa's Willie Reed barreled to the basket through a foul for an old fashioned and-one that he converted to put his team up 82-81 with 30.2 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Brandon Paul knifed through the lane to his left and found an open James Singleton in the corner for a three-pointer that pulled the hosts back ahead 84-82 with 9.7 seconds left.
The Energy regrouped during a timeout to call Marcus Hall's number on a pull-up triple that found the bottom of the net to regain the lead, 85-84. Charge guard Jorge Gutierrez missed a contested layup, with the ball glancing out of bounds with 1.6 seconds left and the possession arrow in favor of the Charge. Gutierrez's inbounds pass found Singleton underneath the hoop, and his turnaround jumper trickled around and out of the rim as time expired. Iowa snaps Canton's four-game winning streak and the two teams will meet three more times in the Charge's final six games this season.
Canton had six players reach double figures, led by Brandon Paul's 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in 33 minutes off the bench. James Singleton registered his fourth double-double in the last six games with 11 points and 12 boards in 41 minutes. Jorge Gutierrez-Cardenas supplied an all-around effort of 12 points, four boards, five assists, and two steals in 31 minutes. Chris Crawford added 13 points off the bench, while Cleveland Cavaliers assignment Joe Harris scored 10 points with five assists in 26 minutes.
Damien Wilkins finished with a game-high 21 points with five boards and four assists in 41 minutes for Iowa. Hall netted 19 points in 39 minutes, while Jarnell Stokes added 17 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks in 43 minutes on assignment from the Memphis Grizzlies. Reed ended his night with 17 points, 19 rebounds, and three blocks in 40 minutes of action.
Canton begins a three-game road trip with a visit to the Westchester Knicks (New York Knicks affiliate) on Tuesday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m. To view the 2014-15 Canton Charge home schedule complete with promotions and special deals, head to www.CantonCharge.com/promotions.
