Canaries Win Third Straight Behind Seyler's Gem

August 9, 2018 - American Association (AA) - Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Mark Seyler threw six shutout innings, Maxx Garrett hit his ninth home run of the year, and the Sioux Falls Canaries beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-1 at the Birdcage on Friday.

It was the Birds' third straight win, their longest winning streak since June 30.

Seyler, making his second start as a Canary, allowed just three hits, walking four and striking out three to earn the win.

Sioux Falls gave Seyler two runs of support right away in the first inning. A Jordan Dean leadoff single and a David Bergin double made it second and third with no one out.

Dean scored on a wild pitch from Fargo-Moorhead starter Will Solomon, moving Bergin to third. A Chris Grayson ground ball allowed Bergin to come home, making it 2-0 Birds.

Garrett hit a solo shot to left off Solomon in the sixth, making it 3-0.

The Birds' bullpen took over after that, starting with a perfect seventh inning from Ryan Fritze.

Nicco Blank ran into trouble in the eighth, putting men on first and second with two out. But lefty Luis Pollorena came on and struck out Keury de la Cruz to end the threat.

Kyle Schepel came on for the ninth. Though he allowed an RBI single to Yhoxian Medina to break up the shutout, he struck out Brennan Metzger to end the game and earn his ninth save of the year.
