Canaries take sixth straight

Sioux Falls, SD - Pat Mahomes struck out 11 opposing batters in leading the Sioux Falls Canaries (22-16) to a 4-1 win over the Wichita Wingnuts (15-24) in front of a crowd of 3,104 on Wednesday night at the Birdcage. The win completed a four-game sweep of the Wingnuts and extended the Canaries winning streak to six games.

The Canaries jumped out to a three-run lead in the second inning. Josh Patton singled and Ben Van Iderstine walked to put two men on base for Patrick Reilly. Reilly took advantage of the opportunity by clearing the wall in right-centerfield for his 12th home run of the season. Reilly's blast gave the Canaries a 3-0 lead.

Wichita got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning. Stephen Pearson reached on a two-base throwing error by Pat Mahomes. Pearson scored on a single by Michael Thompson to cut the Canaries lead to two, 3-1.

The Birds added the game's final run in the bottom of the seventh. Paul Smyth led off the inning with a single and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Hutting. Grant Richardson singled to score Smyth for his 60th run batted in this season. Smyth's run capped off the Canaries 4-1 win.

Pat Mahomes (9-6) gave up just one unearned run on three hits in eight innings for the win. Brad Davis (8-8) suffered the loss for Wichita. Kris Regas struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his 26th save of the season.
