
Diablos split in doubleheader

The Pensacola Pelicans took both games against the El Paso Diablos on Wednesday night at Cohen Stadium. Pensacola won the first game 9-8 in 11 innings, which completed a suspended game from the night before. The Pelicans won the second game 5-1 and swept the four-game set.
The Diablos took the lead in the first game in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Bryan Cooksey grounded into a fielder's choice plating Alex Derhak from third base for the 1-0 advantage. El Paso made it a 2-0 game in the bottom of the fourth. Bryon Smith got an RBI on a ground out to short scoring Marcel Longmire.
The Pelicans had a five-run rally in the fifth inning. Pensacola had five base hits in the frame including a two-run single by Chris Reynolds to take a 5-2 lead.
El Paso responded in the bottom of the fifth with a Kory Drew RBI double off the left field wall cutting the margin to 5-4.
The Diablos tied it up in the bottom of the ninth. Bryon Smith singled to lead off the frame and moved to second on a sac bunt. Smith scored on an error on the pitcher Robert Paulk who dropped a throw covering first base, sending the game into extras.
Pensacola won the first game in the top of the 11th. The Pelicans scored four runs on five hits. Brandon Sing, Cesar Aranguren, and Dylan Parzyk had RBI singles in the frame.
Josh Neitz and Dane DeValk each threw four scoreless innings in the second game.
The Pelicans bombarded El Paso in the top of the fifth inning for four runs. Rafael Alvarez blasted a three-run homer over the center field wall and Brandon Sing followed with a solo shot for the 4-0 lead.
El Paso responded in the bottom of the fifth. Bryon Smith hammered an RBI double into right center field, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
The Pelicans tacked on their final run in the top of the seventh. Matt Pali ripped an RBI double down the left field line for the 5-1 lead.
Dan Smith threw five and two thirds innings allowing four runs off of five hits with three walks and one strikeout in the first game.
Josh Kauten threw four and two thirds innings allowing five earned runs off of eight hits with four walks and one strikeout in the first game.
Robert Paulk (1-1) is the winner of game one. He threw four innings allowing one run off of one hit with no walks and five strikeouts.
Brandon Hudson (2-1) takes the loss in game one. He threw three innings allowing three runs off of two hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Dane DeValk (5-8) is the winner of game two. He tossed five innings allowing one run off of three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Josh Neitz (9-8) takes the loss in game two. He threw five innings allowing four runs off of six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
The Diablos and Fort Worth Cats open up a three-game series in Fort Worth, TX on Thursday night at 6:05 PM MST. Adam Blackley will throw for El Paso against Ryan Riddle for the Cats. The game will be carried live on ESPN Radio 1380 AM as well as at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
