
Canaries Take Series With 8-4 Win

Pensacola, FL - The Sioux Falls Canaries (2-4) defeated the Pensacola Pelicans (1-2) by a score of 8-4 to take two of three from the Pelicans in the weekend series.
The Canaries scored right out of the gate. Cameron Coughlan drew a first-inning lead off walk and Ben Van Iderstine homered to put the Canaries on the scoreboard. Van Iderstine's fifth homer of the season gave the Canaries an early, 2-0 lead.
Pensacola came right back with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ricardo Cordova doubled and advanced to third on a flyout by Chris Reynolds. Cordova came in to score on a groundout by Napoleon Calzado. After one inning, the Canaries led by a run, 2-1.
The Canaries added two more in the third inning. Coughlan drew his second walk of the game, and score on Juan Figueroa's first homer with the Canaries. Figueroa, who was acquired from Coastal Bend on Friday, extended the Canaries lead to three runs, 4-1.
The Birds further widened their lead in the fourth. Tim Marks singled and Coughlan hit his first homer of the season. The Canaries third two-run blast of the game put them ahead by a five-run margin, 6-1. Figueroa singled and Will Smith walked to put two on for Abner Arroyo. Arroyo singled to score Figueroa and extend his hitting streak to 14 games. After three and a half innings, the Canaries led 7-1.
Pensacola got a pair back in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Pelicans loaded the bases on a walk to Marcos Rodriguez and singles by Trino Aguilar and Bo Williams. After Canaries starter Pat Mahomes struck out the next two batters, Michael DeCarlo singled to score Rodriguez and Aguilar. The runs cut the Birds lead to four, 7-3.
The Canaries got another run in the fifth inning. Matt Imwalle tripled for the first time this season and scored on a sacrifice fly by Orlando Miller. Imwalle's run gave Sioux Falls an 8-3 lead.
The Pelicans got one back in the bottom of the sixth. Cesar Arangueran singled and scored on a double by J.D. Reininger to cut the Canaries lead back to four, 8-4.
Pat Mahomes (8-1) won his league-leading eighth game of the season. Mahomes pitched seven innings and gave up four runs on nine hits and one walk, while striking out a season-high 10 batters. Todd Androsko (3-5) took the loss for Pensacola.
The Canaries return home on Monday to host the St. Joe Blacksnakes at 7:05 p.m. Monday's game will be the Birds annual "Church Night" presented by the Upper Room Church. In addition to the "Church Night" theme, Monday will be another "Money Monday" presented by South Dakota Lottery, with select fans winning cash and lottery tickets for every hit by a Canaries batter.
