Canaries Stumble in Lincoln

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (17-21) dropped a 6-2 game against the Lincoln Saltdogs (17-19) on Tuesday night at Haymarket Park in Lincoln.

The Saltdogs batted around in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Joe Dempsey singled and went to third on a double by Jay Yaconetti. Seth Pietsch followed with a single to score both Dempsey and Yaconetti, putting the Saltdogs on the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead. Bryan Warner followed with a single to advance Pietsch to second. Pichi Balet followed by grounding into a fielder's choice that saw Warner putout at second, and Pietsch advance to third. With runners on the corners and one away, Brett Cooley grounded to Canaries third baseman Matt Imwalle. Imwalle misplayed the ball and Pietsch scored to give the Saltdogs a 3-0 lead.

The Canaries got a run back in the fourth inning. Casey Gordon led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Saltdogs second baseman Josh Patton. Gordon came around to score on a single by James Shanks. After three and a half innings the Canaries trailed 3-1.

Lincoln got two back in the bottom of the fourth. Joe Dempsey and Jay Yaconetti led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Dempsey went to third when Seth Pietsch reached on a fielder's choice. The Saltdogs then executed a double steal with Pietsch taking second and Dempsey scoring. Dempsey's steal of home put Lincoln up 4-1. Pietsch advanced to third on a groundout by Warner and scored on Imwalle's second error of the game. After four innings the Saltdogs led by four, 5-1.

The Saltdogs added one more in the fifth. Josh Patton singled and came around to score on a single by Ross McCoy. McCoy's seventh RBI of the season put the Lincoln Saltdogs ahead by a score of 6-1.

Canaries second baseman Casey Gordon led off the eighth inning with his third home run of the season. Gordon's solo shot pulled the Birds within four, 6-2. The Canaries would not get another run in their loss to Lincoln.

Kevin Cheppenko (6-6) gave up six runs, five earned, on 12 hits in five innings to take the loss. Dan Reichert (7-5) got the win for Lincoln.

The Canaries wrap-up their series in Lincoln on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds will return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Monday, August 20 for NASCAR night presented by Alltel Wireless.
