St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA (August 14, 2007) - There are some teams that you can do no wrong against and for the St. Paul Saints that team is the Sioux City Explorers. The Saints won for the eighth time in nine games against the Explorers in the second half with an 8-4 victory on Tuesday night at Lewis and Clark extending their lead in the division to 2.0 games with 10 to go.
For the second consecutive game the Saints had a big first inning pounding Cameron Cheek for four runs. Demetrius Heath and Scooter Jordan had back-to-back singles to start the game. With one out the two speedsters pulled off the double steal. Marcel Longmire's sacrifice fly made it 1-0. The next four hitters all collected singles with Fernando Valenzuela Jr., Ben Thomas and Kevin Sullivan all driving in runs.
In the bottom of the inning the Explorers got to within two when Pete Pirman doubled and with two outs Jorge Moreno blasted a two-run homer to left, his 14th of the season and second in as many nights.
The Saints didn't panic scoring two in the third, the first coming by way of a Longmire solo shot to left, his 13th of the season. With one out Brian Sprout singled, stole second and advanced to third on an infield single by Sullivan. The throw by shortstop Brandon Jones got away from the firstbaseman allowing Sprout to score. Sprout finished the night 3-5 with a double, three runs scored and two stolen bases.
The big moment in the game came in the bottom of the third when the first two hitters reached base for the Explorers. Alex Llanos laid down a sacrifice bunt putting runners at second and third, but Shepherd got Jones to strike out and Paul Weichard to line out to end the inning.
The Saints pounded out 14 hits on the evening and seven of the nine hitters collected at least one hit. On top of that the Saints swiped five bases.
The Saints go for the sweep Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (9-3, 3.95) to the mound. The Explorers are TBA. The game can be heard on KBGY 107.5 FM.
