Alvarez, Neitz Selected as Players of the Week

DURHAM, NC - The official statistician of the American Association, PA-Sportsticker, has selected El Paso Diablos INF Jorge Alvarez and RHP Josh Neitz as Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for August 6th-August 12th.

This is the second Player of the Week award for the veteran Diablo. In seven games, Alvarez hit .500 (13-for-26) with nine RBI, six doubles and nine runs scored. He also had a slugging percentage of .808 along with a .594 on-base percentage. On the season, Alvarez is hitting .352 with seven home runs, 83 RBI and 67 runs scored. The San Antonio, TX resident is currently first in the league in RBI, hits (131), and doubles (40), tied for first in extra-base hits (48) and fourth in batting average and runs scored. The 40 doubles hit by Alvarez is an American Association record and the Diablos as a team have the top four leaders in doubles (Alvarez, Walter Olmstead, Juan Camacho and Mathew Kent).

Alvarez is currently in his 20th season of professional baseball. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers in June of 1987.

Neitz is the fifth different El Paso player to receive a Player of the Week award this season. The Tampa, FL resident in two starts went 2-0 allowing no runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 12 innings pitched. Currently, Neitz is 8-4 with an earned run average of 3.65 in 101 innings pitched.

The 28-year-old Neitz was a 25th round selection of the New York Yankees in the 2002 MLB draft. He played in two seasons with the Yankees farm system before being released in March of 2004. Since then he has played in the independent leagues with clubs including Richmond, the Aces, Pennsylvania, Fort Worth, Shreveport and his current team, El Paso.
