Canaries score 10 in seventh to earn series split

St. Joseph, MO - The Sioux Falls Canaries (13-16) earned a series split with the St. Joe Blacksnakes (14-15) in a rain shortened 10-5 win.

The Blacksnakes drew first blood in the bottom of the fifth inning. Scooter Jordan walked and scored on a single by Cody Nowlin to give St. Joe a 1-0 lead.

St. Joe extended their lead in the sixth. Denver Kitch singled and Scooter Jordan walked to put two on for Ben Thomas. Thomas drove both runners in with a double for a 3-0 lead. Thomas came around to score on a single by Cory Harris and after six innings, the Blacksnakes led, 4-0.

The Canaries fought through the rain in the top of the seventh inning to post their biggest inning of the season. The Birds scored ten runs on six hits to take a 10-6 lead. With two runners on John Schmitz tripled to cut the Snakes lead in half, 4-2. Schmitz scored on a groundout by Chris Hall to make it a one-run game, 4-3. Angelo Fermin walked and scored on a double by Ralph Santana to tie the game, 4-4. Chad Hermansen followed with a double to score Santana for a 5-4 lead. Four consecutive walks later, the Canaries were up 7-4 and the bases were loaded for Chris Hall. Hall cleared the bases with a double for a 10-4 lead.

St. Joe would get a run in the bottom of the seventh when Mark Burke scored on a sacrifice fly by Misha Dworken to make it 10-5.

The game continued into the eighth before being called due to rain. Jabe Beard (1-2) picked up the first professional win of his career. Shingo Mitsumori (2-4) suffered the loss for the Blacksnakes.

The Canaries return home on Tuesday night for Dukes of Hazzard Night featuring a Catherine Bach Bobblehead Giveaway presented by Lithia Dodge of Sioux Falls and Village Automotive. The bobbles will be given away to 1,000 random fans. Catherine was originally scheduled to appear on Tuesday, but due to a scheduling conflict she will not be in attendance. Catherine will appear at the Birdcage on August 23.
