Canaries Rally Late to Beat Goldeyes

With the Goldeyes leading 5-4 in the top of the ninth inning, Sioux Falls rallied for three runs to take their third lead of the night. Blake Schmit doubled to left-centre with one out. Darwin Perez followed with a two-run homer that just cleared the wall down the left field line. After Jake Taylor walked, Aaron Owen pinch ran, stole second base, and eventually scored an insurance run on JC Linares' two-out, RBI single to left field.
The Goldeyes cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth when Maikol Gonzalez smacked a one-out solo home run to deep left-centre. Canaries' reliever Madison Boer came back to record the final two outs and earn his third save.
Sioux Falls (14-26) took an early lead on back-to-back two-out doubles from Jake Taylor and David Bergin in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the second, Josh Romanski singled leading off and advanced to second on a full-count walk to Casio Grider. Jacob Rogers reached on a throwing error by Taylor at first base that allowed Romanski to score the tying run. Two batters later, Wes Darvill drove in Grider on a groundout to first to give Winnipeg its first lead.
The Canaries scratched across a pair of two-out runs to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth. With first and second and two outs, Ryan Lashley singled up the middle to score Taylor with the tying run. Linares scored the go-ahead run on Carlton Tanabe's relay throw to second as Lashley tried to advance an extra base.
The Goldeyes answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Romanksi tripled to centre with one out and scored on an RBI double from Grider. After Grider stole third base, Rogers lined a double down the left field line to score Grider and put Winnipeg ahead 4-3.
The Canaries tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-out, bases loaded walk to Bergin.
In the bottom of the eighth, Rogers helped break up a potential inning-ending double play, allowing Romanski to score the Goldeyes' fifth run on a fielder's choice groundball from Tanabe. Romanski tripled to lead off the inning. The two triples tied a Goldeyes' single-game record last accomplished by Chris Roberson on July 21st, 2012 at Sioux Falls.
Kevin McGovern started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision. McGovern allowed three runs, two earned, in six and two-thirds innings . McGovern walked none for a second consecutive start and struck out six.
Kris Regas started for the Canaries and also took a no-decision, allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits in five and one-third innings. Regas walked one and struck out eight.
Billy Waltrip (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Canaries. Cameron McVey (0-2) took the loss for Winnipeg.
Adam Heisler returned to the starting lineup on Saturday, and had a 14-game hitting streak come to an end. Heisler last played on June 18th. Romanski finished with three hits and three runs scored.
The series finale is Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Edwin Carl (3-3, 4.86) faces right-hander Shawn Blackwell (4-3, 6.44).
