Errors Doom RailCats in 6-4 Loss

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (23-18) committed four errors that led to five unearned runs in a 6-4 loss to the Sioux City Explorers (21-21).

The RailCats jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring a pair in the 1st inning. Then, in the bottom of the 3rd, the X's put up four runs and never looked back.

The Cats turned a double play to clear the bases before the damage came. Starting pitcher Karl Triana walked Tommy Mendonca. Then, an error by second baseman EJ Devarie allowed Derrick Robinson to reach. After another walk, Michael Lang doubled in three runs to make the game 3-2. The final run of the inning scored on an error by right fielder Joe Moroney.

Two more Sioux City runs came across in the bottom of the 6th, with one counted as unearned due to another RailCat error making the score 6-2.

The RailCats started a comeback in the top of the 8th inning but it fell short. Brennan Metzger and Alex Crosby had hits that helped manufacture the two runs. The X's turned to shutdown reliever Rob Wort to get out of the jam.

Triana was charged with the loss after pitching five innings and allowing four runs, although none of them were earned. Moises Melendez threw two innings in his first appearance for Gary SouthShore.  He gave up two runs (one earned) on one hit and two walks. Conrad Wozniak pitched a scoreless 8th inning.

Bryan Escanio got the win for Sioux City after going seven innings and allowing three runs. Jake Kuebler threw 0.2 innings before Wort came on for the four-out save.

Metzger was the only RailCat with multiple hits in the game. The Cats mustered just seven hits, meaning they have only 13 in the first two games of the series.

The RailCats go for the series win in the rubber match tomorrow night in Iowa. This would be the sixth straight series win for the RailCats. First pitch is at 7:00 PM and coverage begins at 6:35 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
