Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN - The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced today their leadoff man and one of their most productive players, OF Cameron Newell, was placed on the Disabled List retroactive to Wednesday, June 29th. The RailCats signed rookie OF Joe Moroney to fill the roster spot.
Newell injured his hand in his final at bat against the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Wednesday. Newell had manned left field in 28 games and hit lead off in 35 games. The second-year player was leading the team in runs scored, hits, and triples. Newell had proven one of the most consistent hitters in the RailCats lineup and led the team in average for a chunk of the season. He was slumping a little recently, hitting .200 in the last 10 games.
Moroney brings power-five conference college experience to the RailCats. The outfielder finished his career at Kansas University in May after four successful seasons. The right-hander excelled in his senior season, hitting .304 with 11 doubles in 53 games. He had a career batting average of .287 with an on-base percentage of .386. He was second on the team in stolen bases (eight) in his senior year.
Moroney is from Pleasanton, CA and attended Amador Valley High School. He played in the Texas Collegiate League and the Alaska League for summer college ball the past two years.
The 15th anniversary season for RailCats baseball continues tonight with a game in Sioux City. Gary SouthShore goes for their sixth straight series win and hopes to build on their lead in the Central Division.
