
9th Inning Homer Propels Canaries to 7-6 Win

WINNIPEG, MB- The Sioux Falls Canaries continued their three-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Saturday night, evening up the series with a dramatic 7-6 win in front of 4,267 fans at Shaw Park
Goldeyes starting pitcher Kevin McGovern picked up a no-decision after allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out six batters over 6 2/3 innings. Â McGovern (2-1, 4.00 ERA) left the game in the top of the 7th inning after retiring the first two batters of the inning. The Left-hander had only thrown 85 pitches on the day, but left the game with a 2-1 lead.
Canaries starting pitcher Kris Regas looked good in his second start of the season, striking out a season high eight batters over 5 1/3 innings of work. Â Regas (3-2, 5.96 ERA) allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits while walking one batter.
The Canaries tied the game up at 2-2 Â in the top of the 6th inning when Ryan Lashley roped a two-out single into centerfield, bringing home Jake Taylor. Â JC Linares scored the go-ahead run on the same play, after a throwing error from Goldeyes catcher Carlton Tanabe.
The Winnipeg offense knocked Regas out of the game in the bottom of the 6th inning after Josh Romanski hit a triple off the wall in left and later scored on a Casio Grider RBI double. The Goldeyes regained the lead one batter later when Jacob Rogers doubled home Grider to make it a 4-3 game.
The Canaries tied the game up again in the top of the 7th inning against Goldeyes RHP Kyle Lotzkar, who gave up a two-out single to Blake Schmit before walking three straight batters, including David Bergin who walked with the bases loaded to bring home the tying run.
The Goldeyes regained the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning when Romanski hit his second triple of the night off the wall in left before scoring the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice to give Winnipeg the 5-4 lead.
The Canaries final strike came in the top of the 9th inning against former Canaries relief pitcher, and Goldeyes closer, Cameron McVey. Schmit got the come-back effort going with a one-out double, his third hit of the night, before Darwin Perez sent a two-run homerun over the wall in left. Â J.C. Linares provided an insurance run three batters later with an RBI single to left, bringing home Taylor to give the Canaries a 7-5.
The Winnipeg offense had one final comeback attempt in the bottom of the 9th inning against Canaries closer Madison Boer, who gave up a one out, solo homerun to Goldeyes shortstop Maikol Gonzalez before retiring the final two batters of the night to earn his third save of the season.
Relief pitcher Billy Waltrip earned his first win of the 2016 season, after allowing one run on one hit in one inning of work. Dylan Thompson also looked good in relief, holding the Goldeyes hitless and scoreless over 1 1/3 innings.
Schmit once again paced the Canaries offensive attack, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored. Â Schmit bumped his batting average up to .371 on the season, second best in the American Association this season. Â Taylor had another good night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.
The series continues on Saturday night with RHP Shawn Blackwell (4-3, 6.44 ERA) making his ninth start of the season against Goldeyes RHP Edwin Karl (3-3, 4.86 ERA). First pitch on Sunday afternoon is scheduled for 1:05 PM from Winnipeg's Shaw Park.
The Canaries return to Sioux Falls Stadium on July 4th to open up a three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones.
