Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
EL PASO, Texas. - The Sioux Falls Canaries had a six-run lead in the sixth inning on Sunday night, but they could not stave off an El Paso Diablos comeback, losing 12-10 at Cohen Stadium.
El Paso (9-25) scored eight unanswered runs from the bottom of the sixth on to overtake the Canaries (13-24) and win the four-game series. The Canaries concluded a 10-game road trip through Texas with only one win.
Trailing 10-9 in the eighth inning, Edgar Corcino tripled for El Paso with two outs and nobody on against Jack Van Leur (0-2). Jonathan Cisneros then doubled him home to tie the game. Van Leur exited, and Alan DeRatt came in but gave up an RBI double to Brian Joynt for an 11-10 El Paso lead. Murray Watts padded it with an RBI single.
Joynt went 4-for-5 with two RBI while Miguel Chacoa also had four hits.
The Canaries jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning and eventually built a 10-4 advantage after the top of the sixth inning. Jared Clark and Cory Morales each homered, while Tim Pahuta had three hits and two RBI.
But El Paso rallied for five runs, four with two outs, in the bottom of the sixth. El Paso loaded the bases with nobody on base against Canaries starter Adam Champion. They eventually cracked six hits total and sent nine men to the plate.
Neither team's starter factored in the decision. Champion gave up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits in five-plus innings. He walked two and struck out one.
Van Leur suffered the loss relief and Marshall Schuler (3-0) earned the win in relief. Chandler Barnard pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
The Canaries are off on Monday while they travel home to start a six-game homestand. They open a three-game series against the Grand Prairie Airhogs at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, at Sioux Falls Stadium. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and kwsn.com.
