Canaries Fall One Run Short

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (16-20) fell one-run short of the Sioux City Explorers (36-48) in a 4-3 loss on Sunday night at Lewis & Clark Park in Sioux City.

The Explorers rallied with two outs to take a three-run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jake Daubert walked and Jorge Moreno reached on an infield single to set the stage for Alex Llanos. Llanos singled to bring home Daubert for a 1-0 lead. Brandon Jones drew a walk to load the bases. Paul Weichard followed with a single up the middle to score Moreno and Llanos. After one inning, the Explorers led 3-0.

The Canaries blasted their way onto the scoreboard in the fourth inning. With two outs, Abner Arroyo walked and Orlando Miller followed with his seventh home run of the season. Miller's two-run shot pulled the Canaries within a run, 3-2.

Sioux City got one back in the bottom of the fifth. Jorge Moreno led off the inning with his 12th home run of the season. After five innings, the Explorers led by two, 4-2.

The Birds got the run right back in the sixth. Casey Gordon led off the inning with a double. Gordon advanced to third on a fly out by James Shanks and scored on a ground out by Ben Van Iderstine. Gordon's run pulled the Canaries back within one, 4-3. The Birds would not be able to get the run to tie it in the 4-3 defeat.

Ryan Ford (5-5) suffered the loss for the Canaries. Alexander Francisco (9-6) picked up the win for Sioux City. Matt Wilkinson saved his 12th game of the season.
