Aviators Swept by Sports

Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

In 100 degree temperatures at Shreveport's Fairgrounds Field, the Aviators dropped a 4-1 Sunday afternoon decision to the Sports. The loss completed a 3 game sweep for Shreveport, avenging a four game sweep to Coastal Bend last weekend in Robstown.

The Aviators scored their lone run of the ballgame in the first inning when Bryon Smith's one out single scored Brian Fryer who had singled and advanced earlier in the inning.

Shreveport took the lead for good in their first at bat when Jack Joffrion singled and Chad Gambill homered to make it 2-1 Sports. In the fifth, they added two more when Brian Cooksey singled and Deacon Burns doubled to put runners at second and third before Joffrion hit a sacrifice fly to right that upped the advantage to 3-1. JP Schmidt then doubled to score Burns and the Sports had a 4-1 lead.

The Aviators threatened in the sixth and seventh but could not score.

In the sixth, they loaded the bases with one out as Fryer and Smith singled before Grant Richardson drew a walk. But Will Lewis hit a hard grounder to third and the Sports turned a 5-2-3 double play. In the seventh with men at second and third and none out, Ryan Smith hit a fly ball to center field. Phillip Grau tagged at third and headed for home but Burns' throw was on target and Grau was tagged out for an 8-2 double play.

TJ Hendricks went the full eight innings for Coastal Bend but took the loss to fall to 3-10 on the year. Mal Winters pitched seven innings and earned the win for Shreveport. He's now 6-3 on the season. In addition to being swept, the Aviators playoff chances likely wilted in the sweltering heat as well. They now trail first place Fort Worth by 8 games with just 12 games remaining to be played.

Coastal Bend will open a three game series in Pensacola Tuesday night with first pitch at 6:35pm. The game can be heard locally on KOPY 1070 AM and online.
