Coastal Bend Aviators News Release

Coastal Bend enjoyed a rare blowout win Wednesday night at the expense of the Pensacola Pelicans.

The Aviators jumped on the opposition early, took advantage of nearly every opportunity presented to them, and came away victorious 9-4.

In the top of the first Brian Fryer singled, stole second, and scored on Bryon Smith's single up the middle for a 1-0 lead. Grant Richardson followed with a double to left that plated Smith for a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the second, Coastal Bend starter Kevin Lee walked the first two batters he faced before allowing a double which cut the lead in half at 2-1. The Pelicans added another run on a groundout to tie the game before Coastal Bend took control.

In a game that saw the several walks issued by the starting pitchers, it was a base on balls drawn by pitcher turned DH Pedro Flores that opened the flood gates for the Aviators. Flores drew a free pass on a full count to open the top of the fifth. Leadoff man Brian Fyer did the same to put two on with none out. After a strikeout, Smith drew another walk to load the bases. At that point Pensacola pulled starter Andrew Edwards and replaced him with Logan Williamson. Richardson hit a fly ball ball to shallow right that was misplayed for an error and Flores scored from third for a 3-2 Aviator lead. Stephen Morales hit a sacrifice fly to center for a 4-2 advantage, but Coastal Bend wasn't done.

Will Lewis ripped a double toward the right field line that scores Smith and Richardson and the Aviators had a comfortable 6-2 cushion. Ryan Smith tacked on one more when he singled up the middle to score Lewis and make it 7-2. When the inning ended, Coastal Bend had scored 5 runs on just 2 hits.

In the seventh, Richardson and Morales doubled before Lewis singled to extend the margin to 9-2. Richardson now leads the team with 21 doubles on the year.

The Aviators will finish the three game set with the Pelicans tomorrow night at 6:35pm before returning home to face El Paso on Friday night. The game can be heard locally on KOPY 1070 AM and online.
