SIOUX CITY, IA (August 15, 2007) - Put a big "S" on his chest because Charlie Ruud pitched like Superman on Wednesday night hurling a complete game four-hit shutout and striking out a career high 11 in a 4-0 Saints victory over the Sioux City Explorers earning the Saints the series sweep and increasing their lead over the Explorers to 3.0 games with nine to go.

Ruud, working on three days rest, hurled 114 pitches and allowed just one man to reach third and didn't allow a man past first from the second inning on. The only trouble he ran into came in the first when he gave up a single to Jason Tuttle. He advanced to second on the sac bunt by Pete Pirman. With two outs Jorge Moreno walked, but Ruud got Alex Llanos to strike out to end the inning. Ruud allowed a single to Pirman with one out in the third, a single to Moreno to lead off the fourth and a two out single to Jake Daubert in the sixth. Ruud retired the final 10 men he faced to pick up his 10th win of the season.

It was a good old fashioned pitchers duel as the Explorers signed pitcher Jose Cordero from the United League and for four innings he baffled the Saints. In the fifth, however, Derrick White doubled to lead off the inning. Marcel Longmire followed with an RBI single scoring White, while Longmire advanced to second on the throw. Fernando Valenzuela Jr. followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0.

The Saints scored two insurance in the ninth. With two outs Scooted Jordan struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. White followed with an RBI double. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.

The Saints will head home to take on the Sioux Falls Canaries at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night. The Saints will send LHP Brian Whinnery (6-4, 2.78) to the mound. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network and heard on KBGY 107.5 FM. It is Grillz Night presented by Toshiba as the first 2,500 fans will receive grillz.
