Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 14, 2007) - George McGovern, former US Presidential Candidate and US Senator, will be at the Birdcage on Wednesday, August 22nd when the Sioux Falls Canaries take on the Sioux City Explorers. The night is billed as "George McGovern Night Bobblehead" with 1,000 random fans receiving a George McGovern bobblehead doll, courtesy of Orion Financial Corporation.

McGovern's legacy of public service began in 1950 when he served as executive secretary of the South Dakota Democratic Party and reached its zenith in 1972 when he ran for President against Richard Nixon. Despite the loss to Nixon, McGovern returned to the US Senate in 1974. Born in Avon, SD, McGovern grew up in nearby Mitchell and continues to live there today.

"We are honored that someone the stature of George McGovern would consider coming to visit our ballpark," said Canaries General Manager Matt Hansen. "It's not very often that one would have the chance to meet at a ball game not only a former US Senator, but a former US Presidential Candidate. I look forward to having him sign his bobblehead for me."

Serving as President John F. Kennedy's first director of the Food for Peace Program in 1962, McGovern's commitment to combating hunger is well documented. In addition to numerous domestic programs, together with Republican Sen. Bob Dole he created an international school lunch program through The George McGovern-Robert Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, which helps fight child hunger and poverty by providing nutritious meals to children in schools in developing countries. McGovern currently serves on the board of Friends of the World Food Program. In 2001, he was appointed United Nations Global Ambassador on World Hunger.

George McGovern was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on August 9, 2000.
