Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Grand Prairie, TX - The Sioux Falls Canaries (20-13) five-game winning streak came to an end in a 6-2 loss to the Grand Prairie AirHogs (15-19) on Saturday night at QuikTrip Park. Ben Van Iderstine went 2-for-4 in the loss for the Canaries, who maintain first place thanks to the Wichita Wingnuts defeating the St. Paul Saints 5-2 in Wichita. The Wingnuts are now within a half-game of the first place Canaries and Saints.
The AirHogs took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, when Edwin Maldonado hit his fourth home run of the season. The solo shot gave Grand Prairie an early 1-0 lead.
The Canaries tied the game in the top of the third. Paul Smyth got on base with a lead-off single. Smyth proceeded to steal second base, and got third when the catcher's throw bounced into centerfield. With Smyth on third and two outs in the inning, Kennard Bibbs hit a groundball to the first baseman. Billy Munoz fielded the ball cleanly but his flip to pitcher Kieran Mattison was dropped. With Bibbs safe at first, Smyth scored and tied the game, 1-1.
Grand Prairie went ahead in the bottom of the fourth. The AirHogs loaded the bases on a walk to J.B. Tucker, a single by Billy Munoz, and a walk to Edwin Maldonado. Michael Conroy singled to score Tucker and Munoz for a 3-1 AirHogs lead. Later in the inning, Drew Holder hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, plating Maldonado. After four innings, the AirHogs led by three, 4-1.
The AirHogs got another run in the fifth. Aaron Garza opened the inning with a double. After a groundout moved him to third base, Garza scored on a wild pitch. Garza's run extended the AirHogs lead to 5-1.
The Birds got one more run in the top of the seventh inning. Ben Van Iderstine singled and scored on a two-out single by Andrew Barbaro. Van Iderstine's run was the Canaries last of the game, in the 6-2 loss.
Lenny Bays (0-1) suffered the loss in his first start since coming off the Disabled List. Kieran Mattison (5-1) got the win for Grand Prairie, and Vinnie DeChristofaro picked up his third save of the year.
