Canaries drub Salt Dogs, 12-1

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (11-21) dominated the top team in the league on Thursday night, defeating the Lincoln Saltdogs (22-11) by a score of 12-1 during the first game of their four-game series at the Birdcage.

The Canaries began the evening's scoring in the second. Ralph Santana drew a bases loaded walk to score Angelo Fermin, and a single by Dennis Anderson scored both Chris Hall and Dustin Delucchi, putting the Canaries up 3-0.

The Birds increased their lead in the third. Chad Hermansen got on with a single and was scored on a single by Hall. A groundout by David Hoffman scored Fermin, and a single by Delucchi scored Hall, making it 6-0.

The Canaries poured it on in the fourth. Anderson walked and Arroyo singled to put two on for the Canaries. Angelo Fermin reached on an error to load the bases. Chris Hall doubled to score and scored Anderson and Arroyo for an 8-0 lead. Hoffman followed with a single to score Fermin and Anderson and make it 10-0 Canaries.

The Canaries got two more runs in the fifth inning on a single by David Hoffman. The Saltdogs eventually added a run in the eighth for the 12-1 final.

Chris Hall was three-for-four in the game with three runs scored and four RBI. David Hoffman was two-for-five with five RBI. Angelo Fermin was two-for-four with four runs scored.

Doug Johnson (2-3) was brilliant in shutting out the Saltdogs for seven innings in the win. He allowed just three hits, none of which left the infield, and one walk while striking out three and hitting two batters. Ben Fox (4-1) suffered his first loss of the year.

The Canaries will host the Lincoln Saltdogs for the second game in their four-game series at the Birdcage tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Tomorrow night is Live Band Karaoke Night presented by the Holiday Inn City Center at the Birdcage.
