Canaries Continue Winning Ways

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (9-15) trailed at the seventh-inning stretch only to come back for a 5-3 win over the Sioux City Explorers (8-16) on Tuesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. Ken Lup had two doubles and two runs scored as the Birds won for the third consecutive game.

Sioux City took the lead right out of the gate in the first inning. Dustin Jones walked and took second for his 24th stole base of the season. After a groundout by Nick McCoola advanced Jones to third, a single by Justin Nelson brought in Jones for a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Nelson extended the Explorers lead with his sixth home run of the season. The solo shot gave Sioux City a 2-0 lead, and set a new American Association record as the 17th home run allowed this season by Canaries starter Ben Moore.

The Birds rallied for Moore in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Ken Lup doubled and Joe Anthonsen walked to put two on. Tim Hutting and Cody Haerther followed with back-to-back RBI singles to score Lup and Anthonsen, and tie the game, 2-2.

The tie was broken by the Explorers in the sixth inning. Jason Colson doubled with one out to get in scoring position. After a bunt by Brett Mieras moved Colson to third base with two outs. Tyler Meigs came through with a single to score Colson and give Sioux City the lead, 3-2.

The Canaries tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lup hit his second double of the game, and scored on a single by Hutting to knot the game, 3-3.

The Birds then took the lead in the eighth. Beau Torbert started the inning with a single, and Torbert moved to third on a single by Cory Harris. The hit was the 998th of Cory Harris' professional career. Patrick Reilly gave the Canaries a 4-3 lead with a single up the middle to score Torbert. J.D. Reininger then drove home Harris with a single of his own, to give the Birds the 5-3 final.

Moore gave the Canaries a solid start, allowing just three runs and scattering 10 hits over seven innings, while receiving no decision. Andrew Pluta (3-0) pitched a perfect inning of relief to get the win for the Canaries. David Trahan (5-4) gave up two runs on four hits in the eighth inning to suffer the loss. Aaron Cotter sat down the side in order in the ninth for his fifth save of the year.

The Canaries and Explorers will continue their mid-week series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday's game will feature the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame inductions of Gary Hughes and Bob Fontaine. The ceremony which begins at 6:30 p.m. is presented by Topps.
