Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Gary, IN-The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Sunday Morning that team has acquired RHP James Jones in a trade with the Frontier League's Windy City Thunderbolts for a player to be named later.
The 26-year-old Jones holds a 6-10 career record and 3.66 ERA in four professional seasons, two at the independent level. The right-hander was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 33rd round of the 2011 MLB Draft, making it up to the AA level in 2012.
Jones posted a 4-6 record and 4.04 ERA in 2012 while making stops at Fort Wayne in the Midwest league and AA San Antonio in the Texas League. The righty reliever recorded 52 strikeouts and allowed 28 earned runs in 62 1/3 innings during the 2012 season.
The Barlow, KY native reached the independent ranks in 2013, making three appearances for the Schaumburg Boomers, before suffering a season ending injury which forced him to miss all of 2014 as well. Jones returned to the Frontier league in 2015, posting an 0-3 record to go along with his 3.71 ERA in 18 appearances for the Windy City ThunderBolts. In 17 innings this season, Jones has allowed nine runs, seven earned, on 15 hits, while recording 18 strikeouts.
The Canaries have placed LHP Joe Bircher (3-3, 3.59 ERA) on the 7-Day Disabled List in order to make room for Jones on the 22 man roster.
Jones will be in uniform with the Canaries on Sunday afternoon as they continue their four-game series against the Gary-Southshore RailCats. First pitch at the U.S. Steel Yard is scheduled for 2:10 PM. Fans can listen to all of the action on Sioux Falls Sports Radio AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
The Canaries return to the Birdcage on Wednesday, July 15th for a four-game series against their North Division rivals, the St. Paul Saints.
