Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS (July 12, 2015) - Despite falling behind early in Sunday afternoon's battle with Kansas City, the Wichita Wingnuts were in control for most of the game on their way to a 10-3 win at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. With the help of a great pitching performance by Tim Brown and the bullpen, a four-run second inning put the Wingnuts in front and four more runs in the eighth blew the game open.
The T-Bones (25-19) managed to score nine runs on 13 hits the first time they saw Brown this year, but were not as fortunate in this go-around. They did get a quick run courtesy of a pair of big two out hits in the opening frame. Jake Blackwood notched his sixth hit of the series and scored promptly on Adam Bailey's double over the head of a diving Harrison Kain in right to make it 1-0 in the visitors' favor.
Following a quiet first trip to the plate, the Wingnuts (27-21) second chance to hit off of Kris Regas was much more productive. Three consecutive singles began the frame with the last of the trio, a John Nester base hit, driving in a run to tie the score. Luis Hernandez bunted the remaining runners into scoring position and watched it pay off when Kain singled home another to take the lead. Before the inning ended, Jayce Ray and T.J. Mittelstaedt also tacked on RBI singles. Wichita mustered four runs total on six singles in the inning.
Regas (3-3) was unable to prevent the Wingnuts from extending the lead in the third. Starlin Rodriguez opened the inning with a sharp single up the middle. Matt Padgett smoked a double to plate Rodriguez and increase the lead to 5-1. A wild pitch moved the runner to third and Hernandez lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored him to make it 6-1.
Kansas City chipped away at the lead with lone runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. The run in the fourth was unearned as Bailey walked and moved to second on a passed ball. Alex Marquez came through with a two out single to drive in his second run of the year. In the sixth, Brian Erie followed a two-out double from Vladimir Frias with a run-scoring single to trim the deficit to 6-3. Brown (5-1) lasted 6.0 innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits.
The left-handed relief duo of Frankie Reed and Al Yevoli combined to strike out four hitters and allow just one hit to send the game to the bottom of the eighth. In that frame the Wingnuts went to work with the bats once again to pull away. Jared Messer allowed four runs on five singles and a walk before the inning came to a close. Nester and Kain each drove in a run and Mittelstaedt a pair as part of the attack. Scott Kuszminsky put a stamp on the game by retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth.
Mittelstaedt, Rodriguez, and Padgett each tallied three hits in the game Mittelstaedt drove in three runs and both Rodriguez and Padgett scored the same amount.
The series finale will take place at 7:05p.m on Monday evening. RHP Jason Van Skike (4-1) of the Wingnuts will throw against RHP Mike Nanninni of the T-Bones. It is another Kwik Shop Dollar Day so stop by a Wichita-area Kwik Shop to pick up a voucher for a $1 general admission ticket.
