Streak Comes to An End, Saints Won't Win Series after 3-2 Loss to Goldeyes

WINNIPEG, MB (July 12, 2015) - For the first time in 15 tries the St. Paul Saints will not win a series. It doesn't necessarily mean they will lose it, but they can't win it after dropping a 3-2 contest to the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon. For just the second time this season the Saints have dropped back-to-back games and have lost two of the first three games of the four game series.

Facing the third best pitcher in the American Association, Nick Hernandez and his 1.89 ERA, the Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead. In the second Ian Gac drilled a solo homer over the left-center field wall, his eighth of the season, to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

In the third the Saints made Hernandez work. With one out Dan Kaczrowski walked. Alonzo Harris' 10 pitch at bat was finished off with a bloop single to left. Willie Argo's nine pitch at bat ended in a walk that loaded the bases. The best pitchers, however, make the pitches when they need to and limit the damage. Vinny DiFazio made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly and Hernandez got Gac to pop out to end the inning.

It stayed that way until the fifth when Saints starter Robert Coe ran into his first and only bit of trouble. Brad Boyer led off with a single to right. With one out Coe walked the number nine hitter Brady Wilson. Adam Heisler's single loaded the bases. Chris Robinson made it 2-1 with a sacrifice fly. Coe tried to limit the damage like his counterpart, but Casey Haerther hit a slow roller towards third that Joey Paciorek charged, but couldn't come up with cleanly for an infield single to load the bases. Veteran Jon Weber singled home two to make it 3-2. Coe lasted 7.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out two.

The Saints had an opportunity in the sixth when DiFazio led off with a double and Gac was hit by a pitch. Angelo Songco tried to bunt his way on, but popped it up to third for the first out. Hernandez then got Kvasnicka to fly out to center before departing for reliever Brad Mincey. He got Paciorek to fly out to right to end the inning. Hernandez went 5.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. The Saints send LHP Kramer Sneed (8-1, 2.70) to the mound against Goldeyes RHP Matt Jackson (3-5, 5.37). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
