August 5, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
(PK Park - Eugene, OR) - Canadians 3B Kellen Sweeney broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 11th inning with a two-run triple off of Eugene RHP Matthew Sheppard that helped Vancouver to a series sweep of the Eugene Emeralds on Sunday afternoon out at PK Park in Eugene, Oregon.
RHP Taylor Cole went five scoreless innings for Vancouver lowering his Earned Run Average (ERA) on the season to a microscopic 0.26 as the native of Las Vegas, NV has given up just one run over 35 innings of work this summer. Cole, the first of five pitcher used by manager Clayton McCullough, has now gone 24 scoreless innings dating back to June 21st.
Behind Cole, the quartet of RHP Matt Johnson (0.2IP); LHP Colton Turner (2.1IP); RHP Jon Lucas (2.0IP) and RHP Eric Brown (1.0IP) helped shutout the Emeralds for the third time in the past five head-to-head meetings dating back to July 25th when the C's blanked the Emeralds 2-0 behind six scoreless innings.
The Canadians offense was held in check over the first ten innings of Sunday's game with Eugene starter RHP Justin Hancock going 5 1/3 innings scattering a lone hit while striking out seven in the no-decision.
Vancouver finally got the offense they needed in the top of the 11th inning when LF Matt Newman led the frame off with a single off of Emeralds reliever RHP Matthew Sheppard, advanced out to second base on a sacrifice bunt from SS Jorge Flores and came around to score along with DH Art Charles (intentional walk) when 3B Kellen Sweeney hit a triple down the first base line giving the C's a 2-0 lead.
Sweeney would score seconds later when 1B Balbino Fuenmayor hit his team leading 5th home run of the season over the center field fence to give Vancouver the 4-0 victory.
Notes: The Canadians improve to 5-0 (1.000) in the month of August... Vancouver has outscored the opposition 31-11 over that five game span... With Sunday afternoon's victory, the Canadians finish their season series 8-4 (.667) against Eugene... The win moves Vancouver 12 games above .500 (31-19) through 50 Northwest League games... This marks the 3rd series sweep of a West Division rival this season (at Salem-Keizer July 4-6; vs. Salem-Keizer July 31-August 2; at Eugene August 3-5)...
