Canadians Return to the OHL and Dominate the Petes
December 7, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Kingston Canadians returned to the ice for the first time in 33 years on Friday night to host the same team they hosted in their final game in March of 1988, the Peterborough Petes. Before the game, the Canadians honoured former goaltender Chris Clifford with a ceremony to raise his banner to the rafters. Clifford was the first goalie to score a goal in OHL history accomplishing the feat on January 7, 1986.
The throwback jerseys had the players fired up and ready to go from the drop of the puck.
Dawson Baker opened the scoring less than a minute into the game. It was an odd goal that bounced over top of the net and behind Tye Austin to give the Canadians a 1-0 lead.
They continued to stay hot when Nick Wong beat Austin with a wrist shot on the power play to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Petes would answer with a power play goal of their own. Declan Chisholm took a point shot that hit the post and deflected by Ryan Dugas to cut the Canadians lead in half.
The power play unit continued to produce for the Canadians before the end of the period. Nick King took a wrist shot from the point that was deflected in front by Zayde Wisdom. It was Wisdom's team leading 15th goal of the season and it sent Kingston to the dressing room with a 3-1 lead.
There was more power play success early in the second period for Kingston. Dawson Baker scored his second of the game when he found a rebound in front of the net. Kingston led 4-1 on the strength of three power play goals.
Max Grondin brought the Petes back within two after Ryan Dugas made two spectacular saves. Grondin capitalized on the third opportunity and found a way to get the puck through a crowd to make it 4-2.
From that point on it was all Canadians and it started with Shane Wright. The exceptional status player banked a backhand shot off a defender and in for his 24th point of the season giving him the rookie scoring lead. It also extended his point streak to eight games.
Nick King was next to hit the scoresheet when he held the puck on an odd man rush and waited for a lane to clear before beating Austin with a wrist shot to make it 6-2.
The final goal of the game came late in the third period, but it was a big one for Dawson Baker. He got his stick on the puck in mid air to tap it into the net for his third goal of the night giving him his first career hat trick.
For the first time in 33 years the Kingston "Canadians" had won an OHL game. With the Mississauga Steelheads losing to the Hamilton Bulldogs it put Kingston into the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.
It was Kingston's second straight win over the Petes who entered the game as the top team in the OHL.
The two teams will square off again in less than 24 hours in Peterborough. The Frontenacs will then return on December 13 to host the Barrie Colts for Special Olympics night. Tickets are available at the Leon's Centre box office or at ticketmaster.ca.
