Owen Sound Attack News Release
The two hottest teams in the Western Conference met on Saturday night at the Bayshore, putting their win streaks and positioning in the Midwest Division on the line as the Rangers came to town to meet the Attack. Kitchener came in playing their third game in three nights, while Owen Sound was finishing off a stretch of 3 in 4. Rookie netminder Nick Chenard got the start for Owen Sound, donning his new helmet while Kitchener #1 Jacob Ingham was between the pipes for the Rangers. The Attack wore black for the first time this season and looked crisp for a full crowd at the Lum.
The Attack controlled the puck early in the game, leading to penalty trouble for the Rangers. During an early 5 on 3 advantage for the home team, Adam McMaster redirected a Brady Lyle pass past Ingham for 1-0 lead in front of a rapturous home crowd. The lead wouldn't hold though, as the Rangers tied things up just past the halfway mark. Declan McDonnell rushed well towards the net and managed to beat Chenard to even things up at 1 apiece. Things remained even until the final seconds of the period. During a 4 on 4 stretch, the Rangers managed to work an odd man rush that found the puck in the back of the net with just 0:02 remaining on the clock. The Attack would head to the intermission down 2-1 after 20. Shots on goal were tied 14-14.
The second began with the Attack trailing 2-1 and playing 4 on 4 hockey as both teams were down a man. Neither team could take advantage of the extra space on the ice but Owen Sound had a few solid chances on the Kitchener net. Ingham was there to make the save repeatedly in the period, stopping 15 Attack shots in the frame. Kitchener had their best chances on a powerplay midway through the second, but Nick Chenard was equally up to the task of shutting down the opponents. The second would end with the score the same as the first, 2-1 in favour of the Rangers. Shots on goal were in the Attack's advantage, 29-23.
Owen Sound really started putting their foot on the gas pedal as they looked for the tying goal against the Rangers in the third period. Peppering Ingham with shots, they just couldn't beat the Kitchener netminder and had to go to the penalty kill after a call puzzled the home fans. Matthew Struthers was called for handling a puck on the face off, but it was a volley from a puck that was already bouncing in the air. Two minutes were served and Owen Sound was able to get back to even strength. With under six minutes to go, Matt Philip would be the one to find the tying goal after being fed in front by Brady Lyle. The score was tied and Owen Sound continued to press for the winning goal. With just over a minute remaining, Owen Sound had outshot Kitchener 24-8 in the period. Unfortunately, they couldn't beat Ingham and both teams would earn the regulation point and battle for the extra in overtime.
Play went back and forth in the extra frame and Nick Chenard stood out for an athletic save he made early in the period. With just over two minutes remaining, Barret Kirwin was called for a controversial goaltender interference penalty. A courageous penalty kill resulted in just ten seconds left on the clock with even strength, and the two teams would head to a shootout.
Chenard and Ingham would deny both shooters in the first round, but Damiani would score in the second when Matt Philip was denied. Chenard stopped Meireles to give Owen Sound the opportunity to tie things up, but Matthew Struthers couldn't beat Ingham and the Attack would fall in a shootout 3-2.
The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player was Barret Kirwin. The Owen Sound Bug Juice North Stars Three Stars were Nick Chenard (35 saves), Adam McMaster (1G,1A), and Jacob Ingham (51 saves).
The Owen Sound Attack return to home ice on Tuesday night for Scott Walker night. Prior to the game, a banner honouring former Owen Sound Plater Scott Walker will be unveiled. Tickets are available at the MacVicar & McComb Sutton Realty Attack Box Office and online. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
