Lancaster Stormers News Release
You can't give a team as hot as the Camden Riversharks five outs in an inning. It is bound to be disastrous.
L.J. Biernbaum homered for the fifth consecutive game, a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to give the Riversharks a come-from-behind, 7-6 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers Wednesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. For the Riversharks, it was their 11th win in 13 games while Lancaster dropped its fourth straight at home.
Biernbaum only had a chance to play the hero's role, however, because of two errors in the inning.
Lancaster took a 6-3 lead into the top of the ninth and turned the ball over to closer Derrick DePriest, who had retired 19 of the last 20 batters he had faced prior to the inning.
DePriest took care of Craig Paquette on a called third strike for the first out. Pete Shier hit a grounder to third, but Mike Woods, who has only limited experience at the position, skipped the throw beyond first baseman Jeremy Todd. Milko Jaramillo was caught looking at a third strike for the second out of the inning. DePriest (0-1) had Denny Abreu had two strikes, but the defending Atlantic League batting champion beat out a scratch single to the third base side of the mound to keep the game going. DePriest got to a 2-2 count on Justin Singleton and ran off the mound thinking he had ended the game with his next breaking ball. The call did not come, and Singleton grounded the 3-2 pitch off Todd's glove for a two-base error, cutting the Lancaster lead to 6-5. Biernbaum hit the first pitch over the right field wall to give Camden the lead.
Chris Fussell wrapped it up from there, striking out the side around a one-out walk to earn his 16th save.
Lancaster grabbed a 3-0 lead through five innings behind ace starter Josh Stevens. Jutt Hileman homered leading off the second inning, and Quincy Foster drilled a one-out solo blast, his first homer of the year, in the third.
Todd led off the fourth inning with a walk and scored on a one-out double into the right field corner by Dominic Ambrosini.
Stevens was reached for three runs in the top of the sixth. Biernbaum led off with a single to right, and Ben Davis walked, bringing up slugger Angel Pena. Pena took a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall to tie the score.
Camden starter Ryan Schurman was chased in the bottom of the sixth as Todd and Hileman hit consecutive one-out singles. Eventual winner Mark Ion (5-0) came on and, after striking out Ambrosini, allowed a three-run homer into the picnic deck by Woods as Lancaster took the 6-3 lead.
NOTES: Eric Ackerman threw one pitch in the eighth and got a double play...He has thrown nine straight scoreless appearances...Hileman has homered in back-to-back games...Ambrosini had a three-hit night...Lancaster has allowed 13 homers in its last four home games...There have been 11 homers already in the two games of the series (Camden 6, Lancaster 5)...Clayton Andrews (1-1) will square off against Ryan Costello (2-5) Thursday evening at 7:05.
