Bears Rally in Ninth, Defeat Road Warriors

NEWARK, NJ - June 13, 2007 - The Newark Bears scored two-runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete a four-run deficit comeback and defeat the Road Warriors 5-4 Wednesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears have won two straight and improved their record to 19-19.

Second baseman Javier Colina led off the ninth inning with a single and right-fielder Jose Herrera followed with a single sending Colina to third base. Road Warriors closer Darwin Soto (0-3) threw a wild pitch allowing Colina to score the tying run, and send Herrera to second base. First baseman Victor Rodriguez singled through the right-side of the infield to move Herrera to third base, and third baseman Corey Smith singled to left field to score Herrera for the winning run.

The Road Warriors jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first two innings. Center-fielder Travis Ezi led off the top of the first inning with a triple to left-center field, and came around to score when third baseman David Housel grounded out to short. With runners on first and second and two-outs in the top of the second inning, second baseman Jorge Mejia belted his first home run of the season over the left field wall giving the Road Warriors the four-run advantage.

The Bears cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when first baseman Rodriguez hit a two-out RBI double down the right-field line scoring Colina from first base.

The Bears would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. After center-fielder Keith Reed led off the inning with a double, shortstop Ramon Castro hit an RBI double scoring Reed, and would come around to score on a sacrifice-fly by Herrera.

Colina led the Bears offense going 3-for-4 including two singles, a double, and two runs scored, while Herrera finished the game 1-for-3 including a single to extend his hitting streak to a Bears season high 11 games. Mejia led the Road Warriors ending the day 1-for-2 with one run scored and three RBI.

Bears reliever Justin Huisman (1-0) earned the victory after tossing two scoreless innings while Soto took the loss for the Road Warriors surrendering two runs while not recording an out in the ninth inning. Bears starter Jeriome Robertson received a no decision after lasting seven innings allowing four runs on five hits striking out two.

The Bears and Road Warriors will complete the four-game series with the final game Thursday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 AM. Bobby Brownlie (3-3) will make the start for the Bears against left-handed pitcher Damien Myers (0-3) for the Road Warriors. Gates open at 10:05 AM to Business Person Thursdays featuring a lunch and ballgame for one low price. In addition, the Bears will welcome the Newark honor roll students for a special day as they honor the achievements of Newark students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
