York Revolution News Release
After an hour and six minutes of rain delays, the Somerset Patriots' bats came alive, putting together an 11-run second inning en route to blasting the York Revolution, 14-6 on Tuesday night at Commerce Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ. The loss drops York to 12-21. The Revs have lost five of the last six games, and 11 of the last 13. Somerset improves to 20-17 with the win.
The tone for the game was set early when York got two runners in scoring position with nobody out in the first but failed to score. Ramon Nivar led off with a single, and Peter Bergeron sacrificed him to second, reaching base himself on an error by pitcher Brian Adams who fumbled the ball. Nivar and Bergeron moved ahead on a double steal, but would get no further as Adams struck out the next three batters to end the inning.
Somerset scored three times in the bottom of the first on four base hits, sending nine batters to the plate. Josh Pressley ripped an RBI single to left, and after a Jose Morban single to right loaded the bases with two outs, rain halted the game for 43 minutes. When play resumed, Elliott Ayala drove in a run on an infield single, and Matt Hirsh walked Travis Anderson with the bases loaded to make it 3-0 Somerset.
Rayner Bautista singled to left to lead off the top of the second for York. After a strikeout of Willie Matos, rain disrupted the game again. The second delay lasted 23 minutes. Following the delay, Adams struck out Victor Gutierrez. Adams' first five outs came on strikeouts. Bautista stole second on the play, but was stranded there.
The Patriots put together a marathon second inning to blow things open early. It was the second biggest inning allowed by Revs pitching this season, as the Patriots sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring 11 times on five hits. Three Patriots reached base twice in the inning, including Jeff Nettles who had five of the 11 RBI in the inning. He capped the scoring with a grand slam homer to dead center, giving Somerset a 14-0 lead at the end of two frames. It was Nettles' league-leading 14th homer and 40th RBI. Jason Romano also provided a significant blow in the inning with a three-run double to center.
The Somerset bats were cooled by York pitching the rest of the way. Byron Batson worked four scoreless innings in relief, striking out six, which established a new strikeout high for a Revolution relief pitcher. David Maust retired the side in order in the seventh, and Jason Olson tossed a scoreless eighth against his former team, celebrating his 29th birthday.
York scored three times in the fourth as Nate Espy and Matt Dryer led off with back-to-back homers. It was the first time the Revolution had accomplished that feat, and the two remain tied for the team-lead in homers and RBI with six and 23 respectively. It was Espy's first homer since June 3, and Dryer's first since May 24. York had only gone deep once as a team in the last nine games (Espy), and twice in the last 14 games. Victor Gutierrez also drove in Bautista with a sacrifice fly in the inning.
In the sixth, the Revs added two more on an RBI double to left by Matos, and an RBI single to left off the bat of Kazunori Tanaka. The Revs scored their final run in the eighth on an opposite field solo homer by Matos. It was his second homerun of the year, and tied the team record with the third long ball of the game.
York looks to rebound on Wednesday night in the second game of the three-game series at Somerset. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and fans in York can catch all the action, LIVE on NEWSRADIO 910 WSBA beginning at 6:05 p.m., or ONLINE at www.yorkrevolution.com.
