Cain breaks record, Power take two from Hagerstown

Charleston, WV (August 21, 2006) -Lorenzo Cain had four hits in Monday night's double header against the Hagerstown Suns to break Bobby Perna's franchise record for most hits in a season as the Power went on to win both games in the double header 7-1 and 4-0.

In game one Mat Gamel drove in Darren Ford on a Sacrifice Fly to give the Power a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Bell's RBI single scored Mat Gamel in the third inning to give the Power a 2-0 edge. Hagerstown cut the lead in half on an RBI base hit Jose Castro in the fifth inning, and that was Hagerstown's only run of the night. The Power offense blew up in the fifth inning. Lorenzo Cain's RBI double was followed by a Mat Gamel three run homer, his 14th of the season and Kenny Holmberg plated the final run of the inning on a groundout to complete the five run fifth.

In the second game the West Virginia Power scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning. Darren Ford and Lorenzo Cain hit back to back RBI singles, and Mike Bell ripped a bases loaded, two run single to cap off the four run frame. The RBI single for Cain was his record breaking 151st hit of the season, snapping former Charleston Wheeler Bobby Perna's record of 150 set in 1992.

In the middle of the fifth inning Hagerstown Manager Frank Cacciatore was ejected for arguing a call at first base, and Hagerstown pitcher Brandon Nall was ejected in the bottom of the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

In game one Brandon Parillo (3-0) pitched five strong innings, allowing a run on three hits with six strikeouts to get the win and Jonathon Niese (11-9) suffered the loss. In the second game Dave Welch (6-6) pitched five scoreless innings of two hit ball and struck out four to earn his second victory of the home stand and Brandon Nall (3-5) got the loss. The Power are 68-57 on the year and 29-27 in the second half after the wins while the Suns fell to 49-77 overall and 21-35 in the second half after the losses.

The Power will finish the four game series against the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. Right hander Deolis Guerra (6-7, 2.20) will make the start for Hagerstown and the Power will counter with left hander Steve Garrison (6-5, 3.87). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
