D'Antonio slam leads Grasshoppers past Crawdads

The Greensboro Grasshoppers got a grand slam homerun from DH Trent D'Antonio and a two run dinger from catcher Brett Hayes in a 10-5 win over the Hickory Crawdads Monday night at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Hickory starter Jared Hughes (3-4) allowed seven runs (five earned) on four hits in three and one-third innings of work in the loss. Hughes's defense committed four errors, three in the first three innings, leading to three Grasshopper runs. He also walked five and did not strike out a batter.

Greensboro took the lead on an unearned run in the top of the second inning. The ‘Dads responded with two in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from CF Wanell Macia and an RBI ground ball out from DH Euvi Solano.

The Grasshoppers re-took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. The Hoppers tied the contest on an RBI single by Hayes scoring D'Antonio. Greensboro took a 3-2 lead on the second Hickory error of the night.

The ‘Dads went back on top with two in the bottom of the third inning. Hickory 2B Shelby Ford doubled home SS Cameron Blair to make it 3-3. A ground ball double-play ball scored Ford to give Hickory a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning Hughes walked the bases loaded with one out before D'Antonio cracked his 11th home of the season. The grand slam made it 7-4 Greensboro. It was the seventh grand slam of the season for a Grasshopper.

Greensboro added an unearned run in the fifth against Crawdad reliever Derek Antelo and right hander Jake Cuffman gave up the Hayes two-run shot in the seventh. The ‘Dads got a run in the ninth inning on LF Jason Delaney's RBI double plating RF Brad Corley.

Travis Talbott (1-1) came out of the bullpen to earn the win. He worked three innings of scoreless, one hit ball. Brett Sinkbeil started for the Hoppers and allowed four runs on four hits in four frames. He struck out five and walked three.

The two teams conclude the four game series at 7pm Tuesday. Crawdad right hander Dustin Craig faces Greensboro righty Chris Volstad.
