Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - First baseman Tim Pahuta's solo home run highlighted a three-hit game and four Savannah pitchers limited Charleston to only five hits as the Sand Gnats defeated the RiverDogs, 3-2, in South Atlantic League action Monday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Savannah's win snaps the RiverDogs' 10-game home winning streak, and Charleston slips to 32-25 in the second half and 70-57 overall. Savannah improves to 22-34 in the second half and 51-75 overall.
With the loss, the RiverDogs are now 14-3 against the Sand Gnats at The Joe this season, as Savannah earned a win in Charleston for the first time since May 18.
The Sand Gnats first hit the scoreboard in the top of the second inning when Pahuta drilled a 1-0 pitch from Eric Wordekemper (3-3) over the right field fence for his fifth home run of the season.
Savannah posted two more runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Francisco Plasencia and a sacrifice fly by Ofilio Castro, handing the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Savannah starter Carlos Martinez (5-7), the last Sand Gnats pitcher to win a game in Charleston, repeated the feat over three months later with seven solid innings. The right-hander had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the fifth when Ben Jones opened the frame with a leadoff single to right center.
After Kevin Nelson fanned, Irwil Rojas doubled to left center, scoring Jones all the way from first base. Rojas advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on J.T. LaFountain's sacrifice fly to right field to cut the lead to 3-2.
Martinez scattered four hits while striking out three. Gene Yost and Greg Bunn relieved Martinez, and Coby Marvoulis recorded the final two outs, stranding the tying run at third base to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Charleston starter Wordekemper suffered the loss, as he pitched four innings and allowed one run on three hits. Paul Patterson, who joined the RiverDogs earlier in the day, made his Charleston debut and allowed two runs on one hit in his two innings.
Keaton Everitt, Charleston's third hurler, pitched the final three innings and struck out seven of the 12 batters he faced.
Charleston threatened in the late innings, leaving two runners in scoring position in the eighth and another on third base in the ninth.
The RiverDogs were led offensively by Jones, who collected two of the team's five hits.
The final game of this four-game series is set for Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Charleston manager Pat Roessler has announced that southpaw Wilkins Arias (7-6, 3.50 ERA) will get the call while Savannah counters with righty Marco Estrada (0-3, 9.00 ERA).
