Burnes Fans 13 Yet Dodgers Remain Undefeated at Home

Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Sky Sox dropped their third straight game 3-2 on Sunday afternoon against the Dodgers at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Sky Sox starter and Brewers number two-ranked prospect Corbin Burnes struck out 13 Oklahoma batters in a brilliant performance, but the Dodgers remain perfect at 15-0 at home after a late comeback that saw them score two runs in the eighth inning to seal the victory.

Nate Orf, who came into today's game with a 16 game hitting streak, extended that streak to 17 games with a leadoff single in the first at-bat of today's contest. Orf was also able to steal second for his eighth swipe of the season, but the next three Sky Sox batters were all retired as Colorado Springs was unable to capitalize on the leadoff hit.

The home team struck first in the bottom of the first, as Jake Peter homered to center on the first pitch he saw in the first at-bat for the Dodgers to give Oklahoma City a 1-0 lead. The leadoff homer by Peter was the fifth time an Oklahoma City player has hit a lead-off homer to start a game against the Sky Sox.

Ji-Man Choi answered in kind in the top half of the second frame, homering on the first pitch he saw to even the game at one run apiece.

In the top of the third inning Kyle Wren drew a walk with two outs, then stole second to move into scoring position. Tyrone Taylor singled to score Wren and give Colorado Springs a 2-1 lead.

The game remained scoreless from them on as both starters settled in for a pitcher's duel. Justin DeFratus pitched up through the seventh inning for Oklahoma City, allowing six hits in total with six strikeouts and just one walk.

Corbin Burnes also pitched all the way through the first seven innings for Colorado Springs, giving up no more runs after the first pitch he threw that Peter took deep. Burnes only gave up three more hits after that, issuing no free passes and striking out 13 Dodgers batters. Burnes is only the fourth Sky Sox pitcher in team history to record 13 or more strikeouts in a game.

Colorado Springs still held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the eighth, when Burnes was replaced on the mound for the Sky Sox by Radhames Liz. Mike Ahmed hit a leadoff double off Liz, then Liz gave up a walk to pinch-hitter Rob Segedin to put two on. A wild pitch advanced both runners up 90 feet, before Peter grounded out to score Ahmed for his second RBI of the day, tying the game up at 2-2. In the next at-bat Donovan Solano singled to score Segedin and put the Dodgers up 3-2, which would prove to be enough to seal the game for the Dodgers third win in a row in this series.

Tomorrow's final game against Oklahoma City is scheduled for 10:05 a.m. MST at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Sky Sox return to Security Service Field for an eight-game, nine-day homestand on May 12 where they will host the Oklahoma City Dodgers and Memphis Redbirds. Home Field Advantage: With the win Sunday afternoon the Dodgers improve to a perfect 15-0 at home in Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Burnes' Baker's Dozen: After striking out 13 on Sunday, Corbin Burnes becomes only the fourth Sky Sox pitcher in team history to record 13 or more strikeouts in a game. Bad Start: The lead-off homer by Jake Peter in the bottom of the first inning Sunday was the fifth time an Oklahoma City player has hit a lead-off homer to start a game against the Sky Sox, and the first time on the first pitch. The list of the other Oklahoma City lead-off homers against the Sky Sox are: April 21st, 2000 - Scarborough Green, Top 1st in Colorado Springs, off Rigo Beltran (Oklahoma won 12-8), July 22nd, 2000 - Rich Butler, Bottom 1st in Oklahoma City, off Aaron Small (Oklahoma won 5-4), April 12th, 2001 - Michael Young, Bottom 1st in Oklahoma City, off Shawn Chacon (Oklahoma won 5-4 in 12 innings), May 11th, 2014 - Robbie Grossman, Bottom 1st in Oklahoma City, off Tyler Matzek (Sky Sox won 3-2). Low Hits: The Sky Sox tied for a season low in hits (4) on Saturday which was set on April 7 in game two of a doubleheader in Omaha. The four hits were totaled throughout the third, fifth, and sixth innings. The only multi-hit inning for the Sky Sox came in the third inning with back-to-back two-out singles to load the bases.

Dubon Extends to 23: Mauricio Dubon extended his hit streak to 23 games Saturday night, marking the third longest hit streak in franchise history. The Honduras native has gone 35-for-99 over 23 games with 18 runs, four home runs, 17 RBI, and five stolen bases. His longest recorded streak in 2017 with the Sky Sox was seven games. Alumnus at 23 includes Garrett Atkins (2004), Ben Patrick (2000), Neifi Perez (1996), and Wayne Kirby (1992).

Streak In Comparison: Mauricio Dubon's 23-game hit streak marks the longest for a Sky Sox player during their affiliation with the Milwaukee Brewers, and the longest hitting streak by a Sky Sox player since Matt Murton tied the team record of 29 straight games in 2009. The previous longest Sky Sox hitting streak during the Milwaukee Brewers affiliation was set last season by Lewis Brinson, a 20-game hitting streak from June 29th to August 5th, 2017. The longest hitting streak in Sky Sox history is 29 games, shared by Trenidad Hubbard (July 5th[Game 1] to August 7th, 1995) and by Matt Murton (April 15th-17th and June 6th-21st, 2009).

Orf Trending: Speaking of streaks... Nate Orf has himself a 17-game streak, which was continued Sunday afternoon. In 17 games, Orf has gone 29-for-65 with 14 runs, 13 RBI, and four stolen bases. His longest streak last season was nine games.

Always On: Kyle Wren has reached base safely in all 15 games with the Sky Sox this season, though ending his hit streak at nine games after going hitless Saturday. The West Palm Beach, FL native is batting .353 (18-for-48) with 10 runs, 3 doubles, a triple, 11 RBI, and six walks this season. Kyle Wren's single on Friday night was his 319th regular season hit with the Sky Sox, passing Jim Tatum for sole possession of 14th place on the Sky Sox all-time hits list, and could move up several spots during this road trip. The single also marked his 248th regular season single with the Sky Sox, passing Jason Bates for sole possession of sixth place on the all-time singles list.

Swipin' Bagsss: The three stolen bases Friday night by Mauricio Dubon ties the Sky Sox record for stolen bases in a road game, done five other times. The other five: Reggie Taylor, July 27th, 1991 at Las Vegas, Wayne Kirby, May 9th, 1992 at Phoenix, Trenidad Hubbard, June 19th, 1995 at Vancouver (Game 1 of DH), Eric Young, Jr., July 28th, 2010 at Sacramento, Orlando Arcia, April 26th, 2016 at Omaha. The club record for stolen bases in a game is four, done three times, all at home in Colorado Springs (Jeff Huson, August 30th, 1996, home vs. Albuquerque; Luis Sardiñas, May 1st, 2015, home vs. Omaha; Kyle Wren, July 4th, 2017, home vs. Nashville.)

This Week's Preview: The Sky Sox are on the road for eight games. The Sky Sox will be in Oklahoma City to play a four-game series against the Dodgers for the first time this season before going to Nashville to play the Sounds for four more games.
