Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Iowa Cubs (7-21) picked up their second straight victory over the Round Rock Express (11-20) on Sunday afternoon, this time by a final score of 4-1. E-Train 3B Andy Ibanez blasted his first home run of the season in the eighth inning.
The Cubs were led by starter RHP Duane Underwood, Jr. (1-3, 3.25), who picked up his first win of the season after blanking the Express on one hit in 7.0 strong innings of work. The righty struck out seven while walking two. On the losing side, Round Rock RHP Yovani Gallardo (0-1, 5.17) allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out four in 4.2 innings.
After four scoreless frames, Iowa jumped on the board in the fifth. SS Ryan Court and 3B Chesny Young tallied back-to-back singles before DH Mike Freeman laced a double into left-center field. Court raced home on the play but Young was gunned down at the plate for the second out of the inning. 2B David Bote, 1B Efren Navarro and RF Mark Zagunis then tallied three straight singles to drive in two more runs and chase Gallardo from the game.
The Cubs padded their lead in the seventh as Bote lined a solo home run over the wall in right field. The infielder finished a perfect 5-5 with a pair of RBI.
Round Rock's only run of the day came in the eighth inning as Ibanez connected on a Shae Simmons offering, lining the pitch onto the berm in right field to trim the final score to 4-1.
The E-Train bullpen posted another solid outing as RHP Deolis Guerra, RHP Matt Bush and RHP Tayler Scott combined to allow just one run on four hits while striking out six in 4.1 total innings of relief.
The Express and Cubs conclude their four-game series on Monday evening. Round Rock RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-3, 4.10) is scheduled to take the mound against Iowa RHP Jen-Ho Tseng (0-4, 8.04). First pitch at Dell Diamond is set for 7:05 p.m. Rehabbing Texas Rangers RHP Tim Lincecum is expected to throw an inning of relief on Monday.
