Bums win streak snapped

TRAVERSE CITY, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums had their six-game winning streak snapped by the River City Rascals in a 4-1 defeat at Wuerfel Park on Thursday night.

The Rascals were able to take advantage of some early wildness by Beach Bums starter Brett Bostelman to grab a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Chris Rainere led off with a double down the line before Bostelman retired the next two hitters and was on the verge of escaping the inning. Jimmy Baker hit a ground rule double just inside the left field line and Jeff Miller followed with an RBI single.

The Beach Bums cut the deficit in half with a run off of River City starter Jake Laber in the bottom of the inning. Brad Roblin singled with one out and Steve Young followed with a walk. Kyle Maunus came through by dropping a single into right center with two outs to score Roblin and make it 2-1. The run was the only one of the contest for the Beach Bums against Laber, who threw 7.2 innings and scattered five hits while walking five and striking out eight.

Traverse City got a one-out triple from Steve Young in the first, but a double play ended the inning. Two runners also reached in the second and third but the Beach Bums couldn¡¦t score, stranding six men on in the game.

Two more runs came across for the Rascals in the fourth inning to end the night for Brett Bostelman. Chris Raniere completed a string of three straight singles to drive home Andrew Sweet, and a Luke Barganier groundout scored Brad Hough to make it a 4-1 lead. Bostelman saw his scoreless streak end at 23.1 innings, and allowed four runs on six hits to go with three walks in taking the defeat. Pete McEneaney threw two scoreless innings and Jared Locke followed with two perfect innings to earn Beach Bums Player of the Game honors. Nick Pepper and Ted Gjeldum combined on the ninth.

The Beach Bums (45-39) welcome the Southern Illinois Miners to Wuerfel Park in the opener of a three game series tomorrow night at 7:05 pm on a FANtastic Fireworks Friday. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will also receive a set of Beach Bums trading cards.
