Traverse City, MI - Jake Laber gave the River City Rascals just what they needed, a quality start in a tough place to win, as the Rascals won for the first time this season over the Traverse City Beach Bums 4-1 Thursday night.

For Laber, it was the longest outing of the season for the left hander as he improved to 2-3. He pitched one run ball into the eighth and was taken out with two outs in the inning. Meanwhile, his Rascals offense did just enough against Brett Bostelman who had not lost since June.

All of the scoring and hitting was done by the fourth inning. River City put up two runs on three hits in the third inning when Jimmy Baker doubled home Chris Raniere who began the inning with his own two-bagger. Then Baker scored on Jeff Miller's single to right field.

Traverse City scored its only run in the bottom of the third inning when Kyle Maunus singled home Brad Roblin with two outs.

Bostelman was touched up for two more runs on three more hits in the fourth inning. Raniere knocked in his own run this time with a single and Luke Barganier drove home Brad Hough on a high bouncing ball off the artificial surface to first.

After a Beach Bum single in the fourth, the ballgame stood at 4-1 Rascals with River City having six hits to Traverse City's five. Five innings later, both would read the same as Laber finished with eight strikeouts.

Bostelman dropped to 6-4 with the loss, lasting only four innings. Four Beach Bums combined to toss the final five hitless innings. Ryan Ashner worked a perfect 1 1/3 innigns for his first save of the season.

The Rascals (40-44) continue their six game road trip with a visit to Kalamazoo, Michigan to take on the Kings starting Friday night. Catch the Rascals on the road this season by tuning in to FM 104.5 KSLQ or online at www.RiverCityRascals.com.
