Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The hitting was just as clutch as the pitching for the Rockford RiverHawks on Thursday.
The RiverHawks scored five two-out runs and the Rockford bullpen pitched out of jams in each of the last three innings of a 5-3 win over Florence in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,487 at Road Ranger Stadium.
The RiverHawks are three games behind Traverse City in the chase for the last Frontier League playoff spot. The Beach Bums lost, 4-1, to River City.
Matt Mazurek was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the No. 9 spot in the Rockford batting order. In the fourth inning, the rookie singled home two and scored on a Joe Anthonsen base hit as the RiverHawks took a 3-1 lead. After Florence tied the score on a Matt Hackney RBI single and a bases-loaded Kelly Hunt walk, Mazurek put the RiverHawks back in front with a sixth-inning RBI single to center field off reliever Everett Saul (6-6). In the eighth inning, Rockford picked up an insurance run when Mazurek walked and scored on a Jono Brooks double down the line in left.
Mike McTamney (3-1) went six innings for the win.
The Freedom left runners at second and third in both the seventh and eighth innings and stranded runners at first and second in the ninth. Kyffin Marcum entered with two men in scoring position and one out in the eighth. He got the final five outs for his first professional save.
The Chillicothe Paints visit at 7:05 p.m. Friday. It's University of Wisconsin - Platteville/Q98.5 RiverHawks Duffel Bag Night. It's also a FatWallet.com Fireworks Friday.
