Bums Split Twin Bill with Washington

Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - The Traverse City Beach Bums(3-7) took the opening of Wednesday's doubleheader, 3-1, but dropped the nightcap to the Washington Wild Things(5-5) by the final score of 4-3.
The Beach Bums got on the board first in the double dip, after two scoreless innings. With 2 outs in the 3rd, Jeff DeBlieux ripped a line shot off the pitcher for a single, who promptly stole second. Ryan Bottger followed with an RBI double to left, making it 1-0 Bums. With one away in the top of the 4th, Will Kengor laced a shot to left field that carried over the wall for his first home run of the season, to double the Bums' advantage. Washington cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 4th when, with two outs, David Popkins hit his first home run of the season. After a scoreless 5th and 6th, the Beach Bums got an important insurance run when Wesley Wallace, with 2 away in the 7th, hit his first home run of the season over the left field wall. In the bottom of the 7th, a diving catch at first by Brandon Thomasson sealed with win for Traverse City.
Jacob Lanning(1-1) earned the win for the Bums with a solid six inning effort, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and a walk, while striking out one. Trevor Foss(1-2) suffers the loss, hurling all 7 innings, allowing 3 runs on six hits, and striking out four. Luke Barker, with a perfect 7th, picks up his 2nd save of the season.
Game 2 started with Washington scoring a couple of runs in the first while only picking up 1 hit in the inning. Jamal Austin started the inning with a single to left. Austin Wobreck followed with a walk. Two batters later Popkins walked to load the bases. Ricky Rodriguez followed by hitting the ball back to the pitcher, Rob Blanc, who quickly threw home to get the lead runner, but Kendall Patrick's throw to first pulled Brandon Thomasson off the bag to extend the inning. Andrew Heck was then hit by a pitch and then Grant Fink was walked, forcing in two runs for the Wild Things.
Rob Blanc threw forty pitches in that first inning but settled down to hold Washington scoreless for the next three. The Beach Bums got on the board in the 4th, when Ryan Bottger walked then with two outs, Jose Vargas extended his hitting streak to nine games with an RBI double to left, cutting the lead in half. The Wild Things regained the two run advantage in the fifth on another rocket over the right field wall by Dave Popkins(2).
After a lead off strike out in the top of the 7th, Jose Vargas was also struck out but the ball got away from catch, Eddie Sorondo and Vargas made safely to first. Jeremy Delgado came in for Vargas to add speed on the base paths but it was a moot gesture as Kengor(2) hit a two-run home run over the right-center field wall, tying the game at 3. In the bottom of the inning, Jamal Austin walked with 1 out. Wobreck, on a hit-and-run, hit a single through a hole on the right side, and moved Austin to 3rd on the play. Bryan Haar followed by striking out and with a 2-2 count, Popkins was hit by a pitch, prolonging the inning. After a lengthy battle, Ricky Rodriguez hit a shot over the head of Wallace in centerfield, winning the game for Washington.
Although Andrew Woeck(1-0) gave up the game tying homer by Kengor, he's credited with the win. James Ball, who went two strong innings before walking Austin to lead off the 7th, gets the hard-luck loss, dropping to 0-1. Rob Blanc ended up throwing a total of 76 pitches in his 4 innings of work, battled from a rough start, allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, 4 walks, and he hit two batters while fanning three.
The Beach Bums and Washington Wild Things will decide this three game series tomorrow night at 7:05pm. Chase Cunningham takes to the mound for Washington and Kramer Champlin will follow up from last Friday's no-hitter for the Beach Bums. Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm, on 101.9- The Bay.
