Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners continued their road trip on Wednesday night in Florence against the Florence Freedom with a historic performance, as Rick Teasley shut down the opposition to put up his third career shutout in a 7-0 Miners win, the team's fourth win in a row to improve to 7-3 on the season.
For Teasley (1-0), who scattered seven hits (all singles) with two walks and four strikeouts in the masterful performance, he broke a tie with former Frontier League Pitcher of the Year Ryan Bird atop the Miners' all-time leaderboard in pitching his third career complete-game shutout. He tossed 109 total pitches, 76 of them for strikes, and got plenty of support from his teammates in the game.
The Southern Illinois offense broke through with a run in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Nolan Earley after Francisco Rosario tripled to center. They would go on to score a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-out, two-run homer by Julius Gaines, with the first long ball of his Miners career making it 3-0. The Miners would add two more runs in the fifth when Alex De Leon hit an RBI double to right and Aaron Gates brought home another with a sacrifice fly, making the score 5-0.
Gates and Steve Marino would increase the lead in the top of the ninth with back-to-back RBI doubles that made the score 7-0, but the story of the game was Teasley, who recorded his first win of the season after two no-decisions to open the 2016 campaign.
On the night, Gaines led the way offensively with a career-best four hits in a 4-for-4 performance with two RBIs while Gates tied his career-high with four hits, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Rosario finished 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored, while Marino and De Leon doubled and drove in one run apiece. The Miners as a team continued their hot hitting with 15 hits, more than double the Florence total.
Southern Illinois will go for the two-game sweep on Thursday night at 6:05 p.m., with Dyllon Nuernberg making the start for the Miners opposite Florence's Brandon Bargas before the Miners return home for the weekend against the Evansville Otters.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
