Rascals Continue Home Stand with Evansville in Town
May 25, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
River City Rascals News Release
The River City Rascals are looking to keep their momentum as they continue their nine-game home stand on Wednesday with a double-header against the western division opponent Evansville Otters.
After dropping the first two games of the season, the Rascals have won five of their last six and currently sit in second place in the division at 5-3, just half a game back of the division leader Southern Illinois Minors.
It is unclear the complete pitching rotation that the Rascals offense will face as the Otters have named just two of the three starters. Evansville will throw RHP Max Duval in game one and LHP Derrick Penilla in game three as they face a Rascals team who is hitting .300 on the season and has scored 5.4 runs a game.
For River City, the projected three starters are as follows: RHP Joe Scanio, LHP Lucas Laster and RHP Zeb Sneed. These three returning arms for the Rascals have combined for a 2-0 record and a 2.49 ERA over there last starts, two against Florence and one against Gateway.
These two teams boast five of the top ten offensive players in the Frontier League, including the most recent Frontier League Player of the Week (Nick Balog). Balog, the Otters first baseman, leads the league with a .484 average and has picked up 12 hits in his last 24 at-bats. Returning Frontier League players Josh Allen and Julio Rodriguez are hitting .371 and .368 respectively, good for 8th and 9th best in the first two weeks of Frontier League play.
Although the Otters have three in the top 10, the Rascals have two of the top four hitters in the league, third baseman Josh Silver (.464) and center fielder Dominique Taylor (.432). Both Rascals are riding an eight game hitting streak and have driven in 13 runs combined. Each player has a home run and Taylor has already picked up multiple hits in six of the Rascals eight games.
Out of the bullpen, top arms to look out for are righty Zac Treece and lefty Michael Gunn for the Rascals. Treece has been flawless, striking out more than half of the hitters he has faced (12-22) and has kept opponents off the scoreboard in his seven innings of work. Gunn has been the top lefty in relief for manager Steve Brook, allowing one run in seven innings and has struck out six.
The series begins at 5:05 Wednesday with the double-header and concludes Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. All three games are at CarShield Field as the Rascals look to win their third series in a row.
