Joliet Slammers News Release

Joliet, IL - Charlie White's game-tying grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning was not enough as the Schaumburg Boomers came back in the 10th inning to score three runs and defeat the Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy 9-6 Wednesday, May 25.

The Slammers went into the ninth inning trailing 6-2, but were able to get the bases loaded for White, and the Slammers' center fielder crushed a grand slam over the right field wall to tie the game.

Marc Rutledge came in to pitch the 10th inning for the Slammers and would be charged with two of the runs. Brent Choban started the 10th inning and was charged with the loss.

It was a pitcher's dual between Liam O'Sullivan of the Slammers and Scott Schultz of the Boomers through the first five innings, but the Boomers broke it open a bit with a three-run sixth to make it 4-1.

The Slammers got on the board in the first inning off an RBI single by Marc Flores that scored Jake Gronsky.

O'Sullivan pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on just three hits. He also struck out four batters in his seven innings. O'Sullivan was facing the loss until the ninth inning when White tied the game with his grand slam.

Schultz also pitched seven innings and allowed two runs and struck out five. The Slammers were able to score one run in the seventh inning off relief pitcher Derek DeYoung to make it 4-2. Joliet got its run in the seventh on a fielder's choice.

The two runs the Boomers put up in top half of the ninth inning seemed to be enough as they had a four run lead with one runner on and two outs. The Slammers fought their way back to tie it, but the Boomers scored three runs in the 10th inning to win the game.

Choban started the inning and allowed a leadoff single, but got Mark Nelson for the first out on a sacrifice bunt to move Jordan Dean to second. Marc Rutledge replaced Choban in the 10th and allowed two more runs to score.

Rutledge walked the first batter he faced, but got Paul Kronenfeld to fly out to center field. Kronenfeld drove in three runs in the game.

The Boomers tacked on two more runs with two outs on a two-RBI double by Ino Patron. Patron also drove in three runs in the game.

Wednesday's Merchants and Manufacturers player of the game is Charlie White for hitting a game tying grand slam in the ninth inning with two outs.

The loss drops the Slammers record to 7-6 on the year. Joliet will be off Thursday before heading to Crestwood for a three-game series with the Windy City Thunderbolts Friday, May 27. The Thunderbolts currently have the best record in the Frontier League at 9-2. They will play Thursday before taking on the Slammers Friday night.

The Slammers return home Friday, June 3 to take on the Gateway Grizzles at 7:05 p.m. It will be the Slammers' first Princess Night along with post game fireworks.
